So I have installed the beta version of Windows 7 and I am pretty happy it picked up most of my drivers by default. The desktop is fast and responsive and so far everything of mine is working.

Im downloading the latest patches for my games so I am only going to be able to test that out later.

If you have installed and tried it out.. whats your opinion?

I also liked its quick response, it logs on and off a lot faster than my xp or vista. Outta the games I've tested I'm not really wowed cause they either run a lil worse or on par with my XP but can't expect it to be great since the drivers won't really be optimised for it yet

I think I'm gonna make an image backup of my current hard drive and take Windows 7 for a spin. Is there an open beta program or did you guys obtain your copies by other means?

Also, do you need a beefy system to run it smoothly?

Well I am being positive about this and I got a 1.7Ghz celeron with 512mb of ram out. Im installing Windows 7 onto that and I will let you know what happens and how it compares to XP.

AFAIK, If your computer can handle Vista, it should do fine with 7. I think the only way to get hold of it is through torrents, just make sure you get Build 6956 as it's the latest currently available.

Also, are you guys talking about the Pre-Beta? Because AFAIK the Beta will only be released on 13 Jan...

Win7 is WAY better than Vista! I'm really impressed!!!!!!!

Software as much as hardware has a feel to it that you get to know, and understand. Each system has its quirks, so does the software. Comparing this with Vista, Similar yes in many ways, However Win7 feels like a quality OS in many ways. The more I install and play with it the more i'm amazed. Its really fast!

I am so going to install this on a older system that chokes on Vista and see how it holds up!

I think its nice though it uses up quite a hefty chunk of your ram, just over 500mb for me, and thats just windows, no programs or drivers installed. I find gaming on windows 7 worse then that of xp for me. The system responsiveness is excellent!! I find the media player 12 a bit -buggy- though, it constantly freezes when adding mp3s to the library -or is it just me?-. the other thing is that wmp didnt play .wmv files and i had to install the codecs. wth?

Requirements were same as vista last I can remember but its holidays so my memory hasn't been too good lately :p

I got mine through torrents so its the Pre-beta but I'll download the public beta when that comes out, I was just really interested to see if the hype was gonna be true or not :)

Well I read on another forum that there was a link to download Windows 7 on Microsoft's site but that it was inactive so there was some speculation that MS would make this an open beta. Don't really know the dates as to when the beta testing will begin officially.

I don't think you should try gaming on a pre-beta OS. That is more up to Nvidia/ATI drivers than the OS. And both only have alpha type drivers atm. Not sure about using Vista drivers and how that affects performance.

There should be a public beta very soon (people saying anything from 5-13 Jan) and even if it's not public right away, it will leak to torrents. I'd wait for this beta build rather than using the current leaked ones.

The beta will be feature complete and supported by MS (updates etc). People using the 6956 build already couldn't get a critical security update because it isn't pushed out to internal builds of a beta.

imho same **** as vista but differently coated; just a vista sp1- but ill try and see.

im sure its not going to be the second coming as ms is trying to hype and some folks believe.

yeah if anyone would put the beta locally that would be great.....

I've got a spare 80Gb HDD I'd like to try out with Win7

As I mentioned before, you can get a VMWare image to play with at http://www.tuxdistro.com (not local - sorry).

So far it appears stable (surprisingly) and a *lot* lighter then Vista, although it's not as light as XP can be (search for XP PE - super light version of XP - after boot up uses only around 80MB of RAM).

I am going to wait for a copy to find it's way into my hands, but judging from the feedback so far sounds promising.
