Is it possible to obtain relative performance in basic tasks such as browsing the web and editing a Word document using a machine that has an Intel P4 and 640MB of RAM? Or will it be too sluggish to even bother trying?

requirements for win 7 are: cpu 1ghz, ram 1gb etc. it might be as slow as unuseable. i neva tried installing it with less than 1gb of ram.

It will be too slow. Don't even try it. I've had customers bring P4 computers back to me with 1 Gb of RAM claiming that they couldn't really do basic tasks.

It will work. On the slower side, but it is definitely usable.

I have 4 machines set up with win7, and the memories are, respectively: 1 with 2Gb, 1 with 1Gb and 2 with computers with 512Mb. The 2Gb PC performs nicely, but the other three seem to perform equally, on the slower side - but definitely usable with MS Office, and some lower spec games.

...at first, when I read the title of the thread, I was like :wtf: is trying to run win7 with 640k of RAM... :o

Had to read and re-read it a couple if times until I understood it was NOT 640k, but 640Mb... :o

:D

Will still stick with XP and Linux which can run in <1024Mb RAM.

LOL, well, with the amount of RAM used these days, 640mb is almost like 640k :p

I dunno if this is possible but what if one could use vLite to strip the Win7 install media down to it's bare necesities. vLite was made for Vista but it's possible that it could work with Win7.
