Hi Guys

I just need some recommendations in regards to the type of anti-virus you are using with Windows 8.

I have been using Eset Nod32 for some time, but on Windows 8 I tested its new Smart Security 5. My problems with Nod32 is that sometimes it does not boot up on startup. Also, if activated manually, it would just disappear during the course of the day.

I can't work like that and don't want to pay for the full version if that is the case and have to try something else.

I downloaded Bit Defender Total Security 2013 trial. Anyone have experience with this? Is it good protection for Windows 8?

Why not just use M$'s own? MSE for Windows 8 has been replaced in its entirety by Windows Defender.... and it's quite capable.

It may be capable, but I am not too confident with Microsoft's Windows Defender. I do not think it has the capabilities of detecting and stopping the type of viruses I may come across.

I have no idea why, though. MSE (which has now been integrated into Defender) was by far the best Windows antivirus before and basically instantly made all others obsolete. Also much, much less of a resource hog than 3rd-party programs.

LMAO ?

MSE is by far one of the best there is. You get with defender.

We have been using Trend Micro products for years now, free with ABSA internet banking. The latest version of Titanium Maximum Security is compatible with Windows 8. I did find that it is a bit overly aggressive in reporting false positives but otherwise very stable.

Friend upgraded last night to Win8. Did not do a clean install, just an upgrade so all his apps were kept in place. It installed with the Eset Smart Security package on (I presume the latest version, perhaps not, not sure on the full details.).

After the installation he could download windows updates, he could access the windows app store and he could ping and do a NSlookup successfully. For some reason though when going to any browser (IE, GC, FF etc.) he could not browse giving a 404 webpage could not be loaded error. Flushed his DNS on the PC and still nothing.

Tried disabling the antivirus and it still did not work. Eventually after a few hours of checking the browsers, checking if there were proxies setup by some random chance. Nothing.

Eventually we decided to completely delete Eset, At the same time however we also removed the pc from the homegroup he was in. That has resolved the issue now so not sure if its Eset AV or the homegroup that was causing issues but thought id put it out there. We are going to install Eset later to the latest version and see what happens.

I use Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 - AVG Internet Security 2013 also works but increases latency.

This. I use it too. Bitdefender wins every AV comparison year after year, so why go with an inferior product? The gaming mode works perfectly and it's the least intrusive AV I've ever used. Loot has a 3-user pack for just R220 or R230, so it's also the cheapest around. If for some reason you refuse to get the best, then get Kaspersky, as it's the second best.

Just FYI if you usually play around with a game cracks, trainers, keygens, keyloggers, (and other types of "dodgy software") :p ... the built in version of Microsoft's own Anti-Virus is VERY AGGRESSIVE and deletes any of these type of programs without notification. ;)

If you have any cracked software on your system, you should either make it legal or get a different anti-virus program! :)

You can't set up exceptions?

Also it quarantines them by default, so you can go get em out if you want.

Ah, that's not a problem then. If the anti virus does a good job then I don't mind a few extra clicks to get certain applications *cough* working.

Can anyone else weigh in? Two different experiences so far. We need a tiebreaker :D
