Hi Guys!

My graphics card (Asus 6870) recently broke, so they replaced it with a new one, ever since I have had the new one Windows 8 is booting but into a black screen, although I can log in sometimes but then as soon as I am in the same thing happens... Right now I am in safe mode and It is working. I have reinstalled Windows twice now, but it hasn't resolved anything?!

I have tried everything... Software and Hardware related!

What could it be?

Thanks

Oliver

boot in vga mode and then delete the graphics card from devices, power down, wait 60 seconds, then power up again. with a bit of luck it will sort out the driver problem.

Already tried :( No luck, must I take it in?

Can't be the card if it works in safe mode. Is it the same model that they replaced it with?

Sounds like a driver issue. What you could do it get a live CD - boot with it and see if it works under Linux. That what you know if it def Win8 causing the problem or a hardware issue.

Don't reinstall Windows.

In safe mode go to run and type "sysprep" and go through the process. It might take to a folder in some versions of Windows 8, in which case, run the sysprep.exe.

What that will do is uninstall all the drivers, and let Windows reinstall everything it finds on system boot.

Hope that helps.

Could be the install that is the issue, the hdd even. You need to put it another machine and test the card. My 9800x2 black screened windows xp and esquire had to replace it the same day  which they did.

It can be the vga card if it works in safe mode as the card is not really being used like it would be. When i booted into safe mode with the 9800gx2 it worked fine but load windows and it either didn't respond or blue screened me. I tried vista and windows xp with the same results yet safe mode for both it worked fine.

The few times I've encountered this problem, the display was been pushed out via the VGA slot or the HDMI instead of the HDMI. Installing Windows again never help me me but pulling out the card, booting to onboard graphics, then putting back in the card helped. Later on I discovered that the video card is pushing the display to other outputs instead of the main one. My graphics card is a 550Ti.

Not so. Safe Mode loads only lowest common denominator generic display driver, which does not exercise some of the card's advanced circuitry/features. For that you need a driver, and assuming you're using the right driver and it's not faulty, a gfx card can put out a screen in Safe Mode but not work right when the (correct) driver is loaded.

Does the card work correctly in another Win8 system with same display attached? Same mobo in another system?

Killadoob is correct in also suspecting the HDD. Flaky sectors or even flaky r/w head can corrupt Win subsystems, drivers, etc.

Update -

Well it went into my fathers work for repairs, they said it has been running 2 days straight without any black screen, they have done stress-tests etc. Why would it work there but not at home? I have tried different cables and monitors etc

You need to start a terrible process. Reload, latest drivers on a different hdd, change memory, could be your mobo or psu

sadly you need to take your pc into a computer place that can test everything.

I had the same problem with a friends machine, we upgraded the pc bios and that fixed the problem, t was an Asus mobo.

Try this to skip the Black Screen: keep the Windows OS DVD in the optical drive and be sure to boot up from the optical drive first. Don't press any key when "Press any key..." appears. See if that skips the Black Screen. If it does, there's nothing wrong with your PC but most likely with your installation of Win8.

Well my father works for IT business, we bought it straight through mustek which imports all pc components etc. They cracked it today, it seems to be random, they say the graphics card and my hard drive seems to be the issue!

Lets hope for the best!

Bios update?

might be your BCLK that's ****ed or bios just too old. Recently had the same **** on a asus mobo with the 560 ti and after bios flash its been good so far. Apparently if its 100.xxx instead of just 100 it goes weirdo on you... Check your event viewer if the driver is restarting/crashing...
