Is it possible to change the start up of windows 8 to go to the normal desktop and not the screen with the tiles?

Similar to how the previous versions started if I make and sense.

It is in windows 8.1. Update and then change the settings for it.

Update to Windows 8.1, that brings the option to boot straight to desktop.

Update to Windows 8.1 Update 1 (ie the one just released a few weeks ago) and it should boot straight to desktop automatically.

If your Windows is completly up-to-date then there is no need for 3rd party applications.

Is there a way, with 8.1, to have the traditional start menu, where you get start, programs, accesories etc? This is for my mom and I dont think she will get used to the new layout

Do you even google?

As far as I can see you just create a startup task that runs explorer.exe

EDIT: nm, I see you want the old start menu. You can always just tell your mom to press Win+S and start typing in the name of whatever she wants to open

I use start8 which does a great job at being the old menu. I was using classic shell but after trialing start8 I decided it was worth buying.

There's also a way to bypass that silly "splash screen" before the login screen which is just a waste of time.

This is the method I have told my 93 year old Dad to use ... he's in the UK, and on Win 8.1, I am in SA, on 8.1, and I grew tired of our skype calls between us, with me trying to explain how to find this & that .. telling him to use Win+S to bring up the search function in 8.1 saved me a lot of repetition
