Windows 8 download?

I can upload it for you, 8 64bit Pro & 8.1 Pro, all I have. (Legitimate unaltered Microsoft ISO's)

Just check what version you have and let me know before I start upload:

Winows 8
Winows 8 Pro
Winows 8 Enterprise

Licence keys in OEM hardware are stored in the bios these days, so no activation is necessary when using their recovery software.
Winows 8/8.1 Pro 64-bit ISO, please? You can PM me the link.

Thanks, will definitely look into that.

I honestly have no idea why MS has all these restrictions (wrt 8.1 download/update) in place, it's the dumbest thing I've ever seen and makes zero sense to me.

It just makes them more money, plain and simple. Unless they fix this crap in Windows 9, I'll be sticking to 8.1 for gaming and moving to Linux instead for everything else.

How though? 8.1 is a free update.
Why not simply have the iso images in the open for download as you still need a key to use them. I mean Win7 images were in the open.

Exactly, why not do it? Because the people who aren't savvy enough to realise how to get around the restrictions for their OEM license will be led to believe that they need to buy a retail copy in order to reinstall the OS without all the bloatware.

Also, to emulate Apple.

I've seen this first-hand in an Incredible Connection and I made a point of stopping the salesman helping a guy out with a retail copy and just told him where and how he could get the ISO to do the reinstall.

I'm more irritated by the fact that most systems are sold with EUFI BIOS, GPT partitioned hard drives and Secure Boot enabled (sometimes forced).

Ah ok, talking about the sly tactics and sales people conning the naive consumer. Yeah it's disgraceful how things are done.

I don't have issues with eufi or gpt, secure boot on the other hand is the evil one!

Having the same problem with my sister's MSI GE40 laptop. Windows detects the 8.1 update, leave to download overnight, but then it "fails" for some reason. Try again during the day, some thing similar happens.

So Windows 8 SL cannot update to 8.1 even though the stupid Store detects the update and then proceeds to DOWNLOAD 3.7GB's of your MWEB-Throttle CAP -twice! Yeah, I'm sticking to 7 thanks.

So If I'm reading correctly, to get 8.1 you would need to re-install windows. You need to edit the ISO installer image, add the file which skips the license key check during installation. Then once installation is complete, Windows 8.1 will automatically activate with the OEM win8 key stored in the Bios?

To uncomplicated your life dowload the win8.1 iso as per the above link I posted.
Follow this http://www.jmedved.com/2013/09/installing-windows-8-1-or-8-without-a-product-key/ and then this http://www.jmedved.com/2009/01/booting-windows-7-installation-from-usb/ to create a bootable usb image.
Use your Win8 key post install.

I'd have a look through the software your sister is using and see if there are any programs that are creating a conflict in the OS. I had to uninstall Steelseries Engine in order to allow the update to go through on my machine because of changes to the way 8.1 handled drivers. IIRC, some Geforce drivers from 2013 also have been known to prevent the upgrade from working.

Alternatively, back up everything, reset the PC using the option inside the Modern UI control panel, re-download the update and see how things go.

As a last resort, follow Ponder's links. Or you might want to do a fresh install anyway in order to get rid of the bloatware.
