Windows 8 massive bandwidth hog?

I installed Win 8 RTM yesterday on a test machine to try the OS out before deciding on an upgrade. I think it is build 9200.

The first thing I did after installing it was to disable automatic updates and install my bandwidth monitor software (I use this: http://www.freenew.net/windows/bandwidth-monitor-340757/8521.htm )

Over a period of about an hour the bandwidth monitor detected Windows having downloaded over 100MB. I checked the task manager and it seemed to indicate it was some "windows service" that was causing it (can't remember exactly as I'm posting from XP now)

So basically it downloaded 100MB on absolutely nothing and there is no way to tell what it was trying to do.

Download speeds were usually constant at ~500kb/s but sometimes spiking as high as 7mb/s (I have a 10mb line)

This would less of an issue if I had uncapped, but I do not. Even if I did, the fact remains that I like to keep track of every piece of data that is downloaded. If something starts downloading in the background and I can't tell what it is, then I go on a wild manhunt to find the culprit.

Anyone else had an issue like this?

stdrt.exe?

The resource monitor will tell you exactly what the process is thats chowing your bandwidth, for me it was this stdrt.exe file, I deleted the process and it never came back but I'm going to find out what is causing it in the first place.

Best thing to do if something is chowing your bandwidth is to google the name of the process, I got hundreds of hits on stdrt.exe.

The problem for me is the task manager did not show which process it was, it just lumped it under a title similar to "windows services", and expanding that tree gave a list of about 10 - 20 items, without any indication as to which of those items it may have been.

Maybe I was just using the task manager incorrectly, which brings me to another point. I absolutely loathe the new task manager. I assume there is no way to revert to the XP/Win7 task manager, which is a great pity.

I would think with these Live tiles that Windows 8 might be heavy on the 'ol bandwidth.

What does the Resource Monitor tell you?

How to get to it: Click on more details and then: http://i.imgur.com/lUEAm.jpg

Personally I prefer SysInternals Procexplorer as seen in action over here. In fact I can not work on a PC that do not have the entire suite

stdrt.exe is a malware/virus.

don't know where i got this one either, but i've had it before, and i completely forgot how i got rid of it. It's just a program that uses 13% of the CPU constantly, and downloads basically nothing non-stop. It downloaded 20GB in a little over 4 hours, and it's driving my bandwidth meter through the roof.

Thanks, I'll try the Performance Monitor and ProcessExplorer next time I test the system, hopefully later today.

It's just the live tiles doing their thing. Disable each one. Disabled mine when I got a 3g stick. Everything is all good now.
