The price Microsoft is referring to is $39.99 for the OS if downloaded. This is currently around R350. The R299 was an estimation based on the Rand/Dollar rate at the time they posted the offer.

But the point is, this upgrade offer is only until January, it won't last the whole lifecycle of Windows 8. So Although they did see massive sales so far, I don't think it will go on at this rate, since very few people would be persuaded to buy Windows 8 (which is almost identical to 7) for $199, which they've said will be the normal price.

What will happen here is exactly what we are seeing now.

Come February 2013, a lot of people will start posting 'damn, if only I knew about this'.... 'why did I miss this'....

At the end of the day, Microsoft's intentions are clear. Windows 8 is the roadmap for their business in future. They are implementing this and will also offer main stream support for Windows 7 until 2015 and extended support until 2020. So, the end of Windows 7 has also been announced.

At the end of the day, Windows 7 users will later become today's Windows XP users - "Why upgrade? We are happy with the OS and it works for us..."

They will all be light years behind in technology, but that is their own choice and decisions.

The proper loader mimics OEM hardware and activate your pc against that. No need for KMS or every 6 months crap, but I get you the price is a hell of a lot better then the R1700 of old.

Reports are that OEM licenses now have to be individually activated.

Over the next few years, prices won't stay low. Microsoft has said so themselves. The R399 (or is it 299?) offer will only last until January, after that it's back to the insane levels XP and 7 sold for.

Presumably their goal is to get the bulk of the retail upgrades in by then. Most of their sales come from volume and OEM licenses anyway.

They ran a similar promotion for Windows 7, except we were excluded because we couldn't buy direct from Microsoft and it was never offered locally.
