According to ‘Damn Cool Pics’the windows default background which displays a green rolling hill is actually a real place.
Apparently the photograph was taken by professional photographer Charles O’Rear and was edited into an image known as ‘bliss’ which Windows in turn used as the default theme to their new operating system.
The hill itself is allegedly a real place in Sonomo County, California. This guy even believes that he’s driven past it regularly.
I have to admit that the argument is pretty compelling. Initially I was quite sceptical but after examining the ‘evidence’ a little more closely it seems as though this may be the real deal.
Although it could be argued that the hill pictured when your average XP user starts up could have been any hill, if indeed it existed at all, the positioning and timing of the pictures in question seem somewhat credible.
The argument was so convincing in fact that Google Maps went and took a snap themselves. You can check it out here.
