I use my computer as an alarm clock. It allows me to play an MP3 of my choice when I wake up, through my HiFi - IOW avoiding the tinny sounds of an alarm clock. However, every so often, MS in it's infinite wisdom, decides to update my computer and reboot without my input. I can't stand this intrusion of my computer. For one, it means my alarm clock doesn't go off, for two, it means I run the risk of losing information, and for three, it now takes my XP 4:30 to boot to usable status. Only MS would have the arrogance to tell your computer to reboot. I think MS thinks that it actually owns my computer. If only I could abandon this cr@ppy OS for good, I would be a much happier person.

And for all those boasting about their lightning quick booting speeds in Win7. It will mean nothing in three months and after having installed a few apps - expect your boot time to at least triple.

Get Linux.

You have absolute control over what goes into your PC.

Trust me, I love using Linux, and I love the control. I've been driven back to Windows by Adobe CS3. Ironically, I'm installing Linux on everyone elses computer but my own.

you do have the option in Windows Update to download but not install patches.
If the patch does not install, no reboot will take place - and you can therefore install the patches when the time is more convenient for you.

Give it a bash.... I am sure you won't be disappointed... :)

Thanks, have taken your advice.

Are you sure that it was windows updates causing the reboot? Could be a power supply ageing, causing random reboots. Could lead to file corruption -> Slow boots

have had this issue many times... it is generally Windows Update that automatically installs updates during the course of the night. And then... on the odd occasion, installs an update that requires a reboot.

This used to happen on 1 of our work production servers... That is how we figured it out.

Yes, I had a pop-up telling me that Windows had installed an update and a reboot was required.

Am i the only that has seen the option to turn off automatic updates?

Dude to me you sound a user who has no clue and blames windows when in reality all you need to do is turn off windows update and your problem will be solved. I know windows has it's problems but this is a user problem and not windows problem.

Yes i know that not everyone wants to take the 10 seconds out of their day to turn it off and it will be a mission but come on dude i have faith in you. Spare 10 seconds of your time.

No, this isn't a user problem. No operating system, should ever, ever, restart your system without your permission. It shouldn't happen. FULL STOP.

I don't want to have to go fiddling through MS's menus to change a setting that shouldn't be there. It's simply bad practice. Perhaps you like the intrusion of MS, I most definitely don't.

Incidentally, I think it's rich saying I have no clue, while you routinely criticize linux without having every showed the slightest bit of technical knowledge of it.

As to the four and a half minute boot up time, that's simply bad OS design, and you can't escape that fact.

care to share what app you using to play an mp3 as your alarm ? :)

Well you must not have a clue though because microsoft have been rebooting after updates for as long as i can remember and they do you give the option to turn automatic updates off due to the restarts.

Something you should look into i reckon, far easier taking 10 seconds out of your life to turn it off than to moan about something that will never change :D.

As stated, I've already made the change. As a rule, I have in the past shut down the computer over night, so this has never been an issue. However, I still maintain that it is an intrusion.

I notice that you don't deny that XP is badly programmed.

Xp is very badly programmed i am not sure why you would think i think otherwise.

I moved from XP to vista purely to get away the nasty OS windows xp was.

Strange, most people moved from Vista back to XP, to get away from Vista.

Maybe 7 will sort out those problems, but it remains to be seen. I don't think it has been out long enough to answer either question.

Yea that is cause most people did not really do much research, vista needs a good pc to run really well and i can tell you my q9550 4 gb memory and SSD ran vista so well, vista was a pleasure compared to xp.

I stayed with vista because my biggest problem with xp was that dr watson crap when my corel and photoshop apps would just randonly close for no reason and i get that dr watson BS. Vista worked and was far more stable than xp.

Windows 7 though is just the best microsoft OS ever made i reckon.

Have you tried Gimp on Linux as an alternative to Photoshop?

Tass why don't do you what aqua does and run it virtually man.

Aqua does not use windows apart from gaming i think.

+1.

Don't forget that XP machines need to be formatted once a month :p
