I am struggling like a manic to try and get the sentech modem installed on my Windows XP Media Centre 2005 pc. It works fine on my windows xp notebook and the same pc with windows xp installed but with xp MCE edition everything installs fine and modem queries perfectly in device manager but the Sentech software that comes bundled with the modem and my signal gives me a error connecting to port. Please let me know if anyone has come across this issue and knows how to fix is. I even tried a 3d party USB controller but no joy. It definitely seems to be an issue with MCE 2005.
 
Try this as a matter of interest:

Install the modem and then create a manual connection. The number to dial is *99# and then just dial it as you would a normal dial up connection.

Might work. Otherwise your best option might be to get the Ethernet cable and set it up via PPPoE
 
mce2005 is built on xp home, and as far as drivers etc are concerned the installation procedure, and the underlying os IS exactly the same.

the thing that is making me think is that mce2005 includes sp2, which means it includes the usb2 driver stack supplied by microsoft. prior to sp2 you wouldve had to install third party usb2 support from the motherboard drive cd.

I am not sure if this is helping, but are the other systems on sp2 level too? have you perhaps got a slipstreamed sp2+xp pro cd that you could install to test for the same problem?
 
Running the modem on XP Pro SP2 here. currently pppoe , but usb had no probs either. maybe check the following and remember, I'm fishing here :)
1. XP firewall
2. think USB connection uses com4 ? Maybe not active in bios ?
3. There's some reg tweaks around that shows all the detail of the attempted connection. Maybe that will provide more info

How about get a router, and connect ur modem via etherent...

I have basically tried everything you all mention except the manual dial and the Ethernet cable. And yes Werner I have it running on xp with sp2 streamlined all ready and it works. Only media centre seems to strugglel. I also tried the motherboard USB 2 updates to no avail. Will try the manual dialing that Rewind suggested but if you no of anyone that wants to sell a Ethernet cable for the modem let me know I have a router with all my pc's networked so that sounds like a good option.

slawrz, I am also gathering h/w to build a HTPC...and if you don't mind to share the info, where did you get a compatible TV card? I am looking at the Hauppauge 150, but seems to be quite a scarce piece of hardware to get hold of.. (only found take2.co.za that supplies it). What TV card do you have running there? And, have you managed to find a decent case somewhere - they also seem to be hard to find...and what is your experience so far? Is it worth the $$$, or just a overpriced fancy gadget?

..ah no, my "systeminfo" command output disagrees with you: (and, AFAIK this command is flat-out not avilable in XP Home)

Under vanilla XP Home OR Pro, no matter what service pack, USB works out fine ..as does jacking in the Ethernet cable, so that's a dead lead..

nope, sadly no dice here either: if the main MyWi dialer app plaztes, MySig throws a hissy fit in sympathy, too! Funny thing is, the modem shows up as a *recognisable* device in DevMan AND I can even send the modem AT commands *AND* get output!

..I just can't get the verk4kte thing to work. Now, before y'all point out the blindly obvious and restate going with Ethernet cable and/or router, I have a specific interest in trying to nail it down by USB. Luke, worth noting: as one introduces new modems to a particular box, each successive modem shows up in DevMan having a higher COM port number than the previously added one. I know this from setting up modems on 'The MyWi Modem Slut' aka my laptop :D - I've had COM ports up into double figures before..!

Anyhow, is there any news on this; has anyone learnt anything new since the last time this was visited?

So as not to overly strain you, I'll leave it at that; but do, please, take particular note of paragraph four of the arstechnica review.

Then; as to my "beloved systeminfo command", I'll freely admit to having a hunch that it's not available in XP Home ..at least before searching for info on it now, that is. Some cursory Googling turned up the following:

which pretty much confirm my hunch (more of a memory, I recall trying to use it on a client's PC some time back). Thanks for the goad though, care of this search I've found a reasonable alternative to systeminfo in XP Home: the "msinfo32" command.

I must agree with Werner.
MCE 2005 cannot be added onto a Windows 2000 / 2003 Domain.
This is the fundemental difference between XP Pro and XP Home, so I am inclined to think that MCE 2005 is based on XP home.
 
Phoned Microsoft support on this one. The techie there said it was based on XP Pro? for what it's worth.
