Windows network connection problem!!

I'm trying to set up a standard windows network connection between 2 pc's.
I go into network connections, select new network, select the correct options etc.
I use the same workgroup for both pc's
The problem is I get limited or no connectivity on one pc and the other stalls at acquiring a network adress.
Both pc's nic's have a red led(and not the normal green one)

What could this problem be?

Please help if you can
 
Is it a crossover cable?

(you need to look into the two clear plastic connectors at both end of the cable, are the colours of the wire arranged the same way, or different?)
 
Then u need a cross over cable turn the plugs on the cable to face u and if all the color coded wires are going to the same pins on both plugs its a normal fly lead and wnt work with pc to pc
 
The colors

The colors aren't exactly the same, I've used this cable with other pc's before.
I tested another cable. It still does the same thing, it flashes a orange to red led with the other cable.
Tested another cable again, there is connectivity if I configure IP adresses 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2.
The leds on the nic's are orange, with a yellow led flashing periodically

Been to Oc have we ?
 
you need to determine that you are using a cross over cable rj-45 connector using 586A standard one side and 585B on the other, check that your network card drivers are properly installed, which OS are you using, have you got the latest drivers for both nic's. ahve you got up to date service packs for both, last resort, use serial to serial or parallel to parallel connections between both pc's, really slow speeds but you will be able to determine if the connectin is working, you need cross cables for them as well
 
i used to get this when sharing my internet connection

i could use the network but they could use the internet

what i found was one of the pc was configured to automatically select ip
but the other kept signing its own ip which i couldnt get it not to

my fix was reloading both pc's
 
I do not remember ever seeing NICs go from green to red / orange light because of IP conflicts.

Can the PC(s) connect to a router? If so, the drivers and NICS are (likely) fine. Will then go with a cable fault.
 
0) Make sure your subnets are the same.

Tests to run on each machine :

From a DOS prompt -

1) ping 127.0.0.1
this'll determine whether TCP is up and ok on each machine.

2) ping 192.168.0.1 (on the machine with that IP configured)

3) ping 192.168.0.2 (on the machine with that IP configured)

Any failure in 1), 2) or 3) most likely indicates a hardware fault.

4) ping 192.168.0.1 (on the 192.168.0.2 machine)

5) ping 192.168.0.2 (on the 192.168.0.1 machine)

Any failure in 4) or 5) mostlikely indicates traffic being blocked by a firewall.

6) net view \\192.168.0.2 (on the 192.168.0.1 machine)

7) net view \\192.168.0.1 (on the 192.168.0.2 machine)

Failures here are most likely due to authentication failures.

Unless you know exactly what you're doing, don't bother going with the next test (i.e. if 4 and 5 fail, don't bother with 6 and 7)
