I use win 7.
there is a folder called windows old. can I delete it. I had xp on this hard disk before.

I need disk space.

No, don't just delete it.

You need to remove it via Disk Cleanup, select System Cleanup, then select Previous OS files.

How must we answer that? You are the only one that can look inside the folder and see if there is anything you want?

Now if the folder names are like:
- application data
- boot
- cursors
- debug

then its probably your old windows XP install folder and I guess you can safely delete it as stated above.

Quite easy? :p

If you update from Windows 8 to 8.1, Windows does exactly the same thing.

But you must remove the files via Disk Cleanup, otherwise you screw it up and a lot of the old stuff get left behind.

I've deleted the Windows.old folder on numerous machines without using disk cleanup and never had any issues. Some of the files and folders need you to take ownership before they will be deleted.

Which you can avoid by using Disk Cleanup. :p
