Windows on ARM to add support for x86 64-bit apps

Microsoft has announced it is working on x86 64-bit emulation for Windows 10 on ARM-based systems.

This is according to a blog post from Windows and Devices Chief Product Officer Panos Panay, who offered several updates on the state of the Windows PC ecosystem.

According to Panay, the capability will start to roll out to the Windows Insider Program in November.

They are losing server and desktop to AMD.

Apple is dropping them for ARM on their Mac Books.

If Microsoft actually get this working, and we start seeing Windows laptops with ARM chips, Intel's last domain of dominance will be lost.

I kind of doubt it will for a while, emulation always has performance penalties.

Intel also has a lot of other business ventures that it can use to prop up the business, and their die stacking will probably be a very good product that will probably have very power/performance ratios (where ARM shines). There is more to Intel than just their processors, and I do think there is a shake up going on there and that they will probably start being more competitive in a few years again, the question is more along the lines of how long it will take. They definitely have the money to last a very long while, and in the CPU space, there is quite a lack of supply.
