Windows Open Source

True, however the reminder that updates are ready is annoying (yes I know you can turn the notifictions off)
Start | Run | net stop "Automatic Updates" | OK

Of course yes I'm muckin about here, but I will just have to keep re-installing Windows as at the moment this lappy is not worth going out to buy a new OS for. I've tried Ubuntu which I had issues with installing. (Dont think this pc meets minimum specs).
laptop specs?
There are many alternatives to Ubuntu, like Xubuntu, which is designed specifically for older machines.

(OS == "Open Source" && OS != "Operating System") || (!(OS != "Open Source") && !(OS == "Operating System"))
bad code == job security?

Format, install Ubuntu Linux

The dude said his box is underspecced for Ubuntu, which is a fair call.

I use Slax on an old PC which is some ten years old (and it was bottom of the range then) and it flies.

Just a point on Windows open source: I've often been told that if linux was as popular as Windows then, because the source is freely available for any hacker to study, it stands to reason that linux would be far easier to design malware for.

However, these guys probably don't know that Windows' source has been opened up to the Chinese Government, so there is every chance that it really is available in the wild.

Then what about Xubuntu?

RetroBok what is the specifications of the machine and what do you want to do on it?

Is there any good reason that you need a illegal copy of Windows running on it?

I couldn't possibly give you the specs right now, I will later though.

The reason I have "illegal" Windows on it is because it crashed and I didn't have the installation disc. So I borrowed a friends, thinking it would give me time to install/find a better operating system. But my lazy a55 wasn't too bothered and now I sit with "Open Source Windows"

I'm pretty open with which Op System I want to have, as long as it has the basics.

Not sure if anyone said this yet but doesn't your laptop have one of those Windows XP stickers on it with the License key?

*grin* good question! Its normally on the base of your notebook. Dell was even so kind to hide it behind the battery of my notebook.

RetroBok Xubuntu 9.04 would get released today: http://xubuntu.org/

I see its not available atm but it should be anytime soon.

Hi Everyone,

Just thought I'd let you know the lappy finally gave up the ghost last night. Not because I want you lot to get out your violins but because I came acroos something very interesting that might be of use for some one else at some stage. Also thanks to you all for all your suggestions, much appreciated. Last night while surfing the web the pc died, almost exactly a month after "abusing" my "Windows Open Source". Not sure if that's how Microsoft rolls or if it's just my lappy reverting to character.

Any hoo the Mrs did a Googley (no tis not a weird U.K. sexual tradition :D) and we came acoss this:

If you are a cheapskate like yours truly and cant be asked to install an activated version of Windows and the only thing you really use your pc for is web surfing then here's how to continue using an unactivated version of Windows. BTW this is only confirmed if you use XP.

  1. Turn your pc on.
  2. A warning box appears advising Windows now needs activating would you like to do so?
  3. Yes you would, a new box will appear (The "Let's Activate Windows" dialogue)
  4. Minimise this Window
  5. Now hold down your windows key and the "u" key at the same time.
  6. This activates the narrator pop up.
  7. On the top left hand side of the pop up on the blue windows bar there's a little icon of a computer.
  8. Click on it.
  9. A sub menu appears look for the about Narator option.
  10. Click on it.
  11. A new pop up will appear with the narrator details on it.
  12. Within this box you will see a link to the Microsoft Website.
  13. Click on it
  14. Voila your default broswer will launch.

Disadvantages, you will need to do this everytime you turn your computer on. So keep it on. All Windows programs ae disabled. You can owever reach your c-drive by typing c:\into the browser window. That's as much experimenting as I have done with it so far. Another disadvatnage is having to listen to a Stephen Hawkings sound a like for a few moments. Obviously once the browser is launched you can tun it off.

Hope that helps some one at least
