I have been thinking about this for a while now, but would like to hear your opinions on this matter.

At the moment I'm running windows but want to upgrade to Linux because i feel that it has less chance of loosing my images, or corrupting them in any way.

Is there any photographer that runs linux? Is photoshop a windows only program ? Does your camera connect to your computer when you run linux ?

what do you think ? stay windows or get linux ?

You need both.

Windows to run your photo editing software (or better, get a Mac) and then a LINUX server for your storage and backups.

You can even use the LINUX PC to connect your camera to pull off the images and then just copy over to the Windows PC as you need them.

I use Linux, but run XP in a VirtualBox to edit my photos (I use Paintshop Pro).

I don't connect my camera to the PC, I use a multi-card reader which Linux has no problem accessing (it actually has no problems accessing my camera either, but it just feels too dangerous to me to have my camera attached to the PC by a piece of wire, which anyone can trip over).

You can do it all on Linux - I believe BigAl-SA does, so make sure you get his opinions. Although I run a Linux desktop at work, I don't do any photo stuff in it. Last time I tried - roundabout 2008 - I found the tools a bit lacking, but to be fair, I was used to Aperture, and some time has passed since. Shotwell looks interesting.

Right, ignore me :)

What lead you to think you might lose or corrupt your images on windows?
