Windows Phone 7 could really take off for one reason - developer support. If MS is smart they will ship every version of Visual Studio with the toolset to create Windows 7 apps as they did with Windows Mobile - this will give the huge amateur/hobbyist and professional VS/.Net developer base instant access to create apps without the learning curve and restrictions of developing for Symbian/iOS/Android. Not that they will mostly be particularly good apps, though.
Microsoft already announced that only VS2010 will be supported. And (what sucks more) is that WinMo6.5 development is not supported in VS2010.
But, I'd rather have an HD3 than an iPhone anyway.
