Morning all,

Windows is now dead to me, I however need an alternative to Windows Storage Spaces as I have about 5 drives with sizes ranging from 500GB to 4TB that I'd like to use to store some non-sensitive data on.

Will be used as a NAS and media downloader.

I have tried RAID before, but very basic RAID with 2 identical drives. I want this to be a cheap solution, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

And on that note I just found a nice FreeNAS vs. NAS4Free article :)

Thanks!

One is pleasantly functional; the other continues devolving during a journey of pain.

Final conclusions: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Ultimately, these are both great distributions that put a tremendous amount of power and advanced technology at an admin's—or end user's—fingertips. Which one is the right distribution for you is a question of what you need to do, what you want to do, and what you're willing to do.

NAS4Free

The good:
  • Coherent, responsive, intuitive Web interface.
  • Compatible with other ZFS implementations.
The bad:
  • No extensible architecture—what it does is what it does, and that's all it does.
The ugly:
  • No built-in ZFS replication—BOO!
(Plus, Senior Reviews Editor Lee Hutchinson just plain thinks it's ugly.)

FreeNAS

The good:
  • Jails! Plugins—Owncloud, plex, sickbeard, transmission, and more! Django! Samba4! Domain controller! Built-in ZFS replication! Shiny!
The bad:
  • It's a little too shiny: 6+ bugfix releases in five months. Plus, ZFS is not compatible with other implementations.
The ugly:
  • Its confusing, over-complex interface may make you question your sanity.

I used FreeNAS at first, then switched to NAS4Free when the original developer sold the FreeNAS name to ixSystems.

Edit: Their bad list for NAS4Free is a little misleading.
NAS4Free includes HAST (Highly Available Storage), transmission, fuppes, Samba4.1, TimeMachine, among others, and also supports extensions (VirtualBox, ownCloud).
The current version of NAS4Free is based on FreeBSD 9.3 RELEASE p7.
