Which is the one to use? I am so confused

Windows Technical Preview 9879
OR
Windows 10 Technical Preview

I have both on my MSDN Subscription, and i must admit, i have not followed the latest windows development.

Windows Technical Preview 9879 is the latest windows 10 build, go with that one :) hope this helps

And it's pretty stable if you were wondering :) Have been running it as my main OS since they started the Insider program thing.

Microsoft added notifications to build 9879, overall im very pleased from the upgrade from build 9841 to 9879. Just a warning, they sometimes dont push updates to preview users so just check what build you are running. it says it at the bottom right corner. Capture.PNG

I say its much better than windows 8/8.1 and would definitely install it as my main OS. In fact i think its better than windows 7!! and its free :)

Im wondering about free, what happens after the first year free of the released version - free for ever or subscription?

I wonder why the trial is only until 15 April 2015

It would be cool if i could install it using my win8 key, and then just keep it after April 2015.

I hate re-doing my pc constantly

Microsft noted that if you upgrade within the first year it will ALWAYs be free, if you are slow to upgrade, then then you will have to purchase a license (Once-off)

Please don't ask me where i read this, it was somewhere on the Technical site of MS

You either have to buy an upgrade license or a full retail one. The fun part about this is their use of the words "for the lifetime of the supported device." Unless you do a clean install of Windows 7 SP1/8.1 and then image the OS after the upgrade to Windows 10, you won't be able to upgrade for free a year after release. I'm not sure how they're going to handle users changing motherboards or hard drives either.

You could just wait for the official release?

yup.... that is what i have been doing thus far, and for the foreseeable future

The Technical Preview builds will eventually be changed to the RTM release and then you could just change the license key and carry on, no reinstall required.

You should in theory buy a new license if you buy a new motherboard according to the license agreement, they will probably have a way to reactivate it for users that needed new boards under warranty replacement though

It depends on the version you buy, although I'm expecting that they're going to drop those limitations for anyone running a Windows 10 subscription, because then it makes no sense to limit you to a single system because that license is now inherently portable. If that allows you to also upgrade any standard Windows 10 license to the one you're using, say Windows 10 Professional, then I'm definitely going to look into that very closely. That would immediately solve any issue Microsoft may have with retailers sitting with old stocks of laptops/desktops with Windows 7/8/8.1.
