To those of you who can get your hands on a copy of Windows Embedded (the 7 based one being called ThinPC) don't hesitate using it to resurrect an old PC lying around (or adding awesome speed to an existing system).

I've been playing around with this thing for most of the weekend and I must say, it's incredibly fast and stable.
I managed to get the .NET 3 framework installed etc. No issues whatsoever. All my software works just fine.

Here's a link that explains how to add most of the other Windows features you want (since ThinPC disables the option to add/remove Windows components).

Seriously, if I was a heavy gamer I'd definitely use ThinPC as my gaming OS.
My 7 year old AMD Sempron 3000+ is now running better than ever, so I can't imagine how nice it'll run on my Main desktop. Even after installing all the frameworks etc. the memory usage is sitting at 540MB and the system is incredibly responsive without some of the default junk on it. A clean install sits at about 2.9GB.

Anyway, those of you interested in trying it out, give it a try and shout if you want to know something.

Im giving it a go this evening. Sounds cool

We've been using Windows Embedded for ages. Recommended for unattended/embedded solutions.

So its just an extremely lightweight Windows OS? That's pretty cool. Will play with it this weekend.

Yes, exacty. The idea is that if you have older legacy hardware that works as Thin Clients in a company you can still upgrade your older systems to get the benefits of Win7.

The only problem is it isn't supposed to be available to consumers but it's based on Win7 Pro x86.
I take no responsibility in how you get it activated ;)

Bookmarked, thanks.

This maybe a good option for us HTPC users :).

Yeah, that's my idea too.
I just need to get a HTPC first then I'll run it for a while and see how it does.

Cool

It looks like a response to XBMC. Way to go Microsoft! This will spice things up :)

Not at all actually, but there no reason you can't use it as a nice, stable and lightweight base for whatever Media Center stuff you want to run on it :)

If you get the thing up and running, try leaving your PC for a while (just keep it switched on when you go to work).
A buddy of mine is getting BSODS when he leaves his machine on and I want to figure out if it has anything to do with ThinPC.
(He's running a nVidia 560)
