Windows Update / Symantec slooowww...

back to Peter7 and his higher capped accounts, its still Telkom.. Cant you get that thru ur thick skull?

They all SAIX/TELKOM, please can we have a sticky to make clueless people aware!!

Clipse, yes it's still Telkom in the end that the ISPs buy the accounts from in wholesale. That's not in question. But last time I checked Telkom wasn't offering any of these higher capped accounts.

* Edit - Telkom's ISP

Again, You said you dont want to support Telkom but eitherway you ARE supporting Telkom.. Maybe not directly anymore but the fact remains, they get your money and the same amount afaik.

thats all Im trying to get thru

Norton updates have been super s l o w for 'bout a month now.

Any ideas? Maybe something's up with SAIX/transparent proxy server

I really have no idea, I've sent off numerious emails to tech support and not even a single reply. Talking to them over the phone is useless!

UUnet accounts seem to work fine, Telkom SAIX ones dont?

@Kalvaer, Norton problem seems to have been resolved last night. There were a lot of updates that came though, maybe their servers were taking strain.

Dunno if this will help or not, but ms update has been slow for me for a week or so and im from ENGLAND on a 2mbit zen internet acount.
everywhere i download from and do speedtests at my speed is reported as 236k/s or so but ms update hardly goes at 5k/s!!!!.
So maybe this MS thing isn't even a telkom or SA problem at all.

Maybe we should start demanding local servers from Microsoft and Symantec. We are paying for their products after all. What makes us different from any other customers in any other country. In fact we are paying more for our software than they are.

Just my 11.4C vat included

Well MS makes use of Akamai for some services so why not try and persuade them to setup a local Akamai farm.
Um for Symantec...there are alternatives to them you know? :) I know, I know not the answer anyone using it wants to hear but i can't help myself. Norton AV is terrible.

DFantom

I was not being too serious Some pun was intended seeing everyone is doing the Vakbond Vastrap nowadays. SAA, Pick 'n Pay, Metrorail, etc. :p

Just thought we could also start with the DEMANDS. :)

Yeh i've noticed microsoft and msn using Akamai, turns out my isp are running Akamai servers too im always seeing in netstat when i use sites like quicktime.com for trailers and microsoft sites oh and msn messenger Akamai.zen.co.uk on netstat lol for example msn has connected me to one now

msnmsgr.exe:1920 TCP blackmesa2500:3116 akamai-29-serverc-wh.zen.co.uk:http ESTABLISHED

its cool cuase my ping to zen servers as there my isp is 20 lol

Highly doubt it is your ISP. Akamai is done on the content provider side, not the ISP side. Apple uses them as well (quicktime).

the way i think it works is Akamai are paying zen for servers cause my isp does webhosting too and then upload all the Akamai stuff to them and somehow make zen dns servers point to the zen Akamai servers to download trailers from intead of quicktimes own ones to save quicktimes bandwidth lol or something like that.

Nope you got it backwards...your ISP is paying Akamai to cache data. Ask yourself, why would one of the largest server owners in the world pay an ISP to use the ISP's servers? Doesn't make sense. Akamai has thousands of servers in many data centers around the world, it just doesn't make sense.

Yes there is a Akamai node in S.A. & its hosted at Internet Solutions. Due to their pissing contest with Telkom re peering, IS has barred the SAIX network from their Akamai.

Thats why your going overseas for driver updates etc. from major vendors.

yeh but what would zen get out of it apart from loosing a couple of servers?
cause if they didn't have the akamai servers zen users would just download the content from other akamai servers possibly the content providers own servers. a mate of mine is on a dsl isp called nildram they dont have akamai servers at least we dont think they do cause my mate connects to quicktime servers in the US not any akamai servers when he downloads trailers. in my view zen is just loosing servers and server bandwidth by hosting them and then they have to pay akamai for that too? doesn't seem logical to me
