I am sorry if this question has been asked before, and if so can someone refer me as where to find the answer?
I am a first time prospective smartphone buyer and i am interested in a phone using the windows operating system.
MY question is when the new Windows ten becomes available in mid 2015 can the phone be upgraded to the windows 10.
My question may sound stupid as i know nothing about smartphones, and will be my first smartphone at the age of 65 and am quite clueless but would like to buy a Nokia smartphone. I contacted Nokia in this regard and they are unable to tell me whether a upgrade to the newer operating system is possible.
So thank you in advance for anyone who can kindly furnish me with this information

I dont think mobile devices will run windows 10, but will probably be Windows Phone 10 when it gets there.
Currently the only things that will probably change is a unification of the store and cloud services.
The desktop OS and mobile OS need to be different in terms of how you interact with them.

Yes most probably will be updatable. My advice would be to get a device with model number x30 if its a Nokia. @Rocket-Boy the OP is not wrong in saying Windows 10 since Joe Belfoire and that other guy confirmed that it will be called Windows 10 as well.

Im not trying to cause a argument, but why dont you consider a an Android device? Are you buying just because its a Nokia?

While it might be possible from a technical standpoint the Mobile Phone manufacturers often shun their current devices when new Operating Systems get released in favour of new models. They don't make money when you upgrade the OS :)

They've already dropped the phone bit on the new devices.

@OP Current generation Lumia devices (630,730,830,930) should all be upgradeable to Windows 10 when it becomes available.

I suspect the previous generation devices will also get the update.

The current generation of Windows Phone devices will be upgradeable to Windows 10, unless there are specific hardware requirements for Windows 10. That's the joy of the NT kernal :)

Read somewhere that a device will be supported for 3 years. Can't find the darn link. Soz. So current devices released in the last 2 years should be updatable to windows 10. Official statement will probably only be made next year.

Yeah I remember reading this when WP8 came out and 7.5/7.8 was left in the dirt.

I specifically want a Nokia and i speak under correction but their cameras are i bit better than the cameras of android phones and my prerequisite is to have a camera that is a phone and not a phone with a camera, to take fairly decent pictures, instead of having to carry a camera around as well , to take unexpected pictures of the grand kids when the occasion arrives.

Go for the Lumia 1020 then, best camera on the block (across all operating systems). And I don't know for sure but I suspect it will be upgradable to Windows 10.

Yep, 1020 or 930 is going to be the best for your requirements then.

I personally have the 1020 and the photos are insanely good, it takes better pictures on auto than an amateur photographer using a DSLR

For a non tech person, I think windows phone\ iOS are the easiest mobile OS's to pick up and use for a first timer. Even if you just use Android on the default settings, in the long run it will require maintenance as it begins to slow down. Also, he is clearly interested in having a phone that will definitely receive updates going forward (without having to resort to rooting the device).

The 1020 does have an amazing camera but the hardware is bit dated compared to newer Lumia options.
I had a 1020 and the photos are beyond awesome.

Somehow Nokia has managed to go even better than this with the 930. Even without the 41MP spec my opinion is the 930 camera outperforms the 1020. (the 1520 has the same camera specs as the 930 so it probably is as good)

See a direct comparison of 930 vs 1020 vs Galaxy S5 here:

NB: Set the scaling to 8MP or 12MP to get a much clearer comparison.

Awesome Nokia Lumia 930 Pics
These are the low res pics .... and they are as stunning as the Lumia 1020.
