Hi All

I have a machine I need to secure against the security that "use" it :)

I vaguely remember using an application some years ago where I could restrict a user from only accessing certain features left in tact ie. I could leave the start button but remove all apps and options except the ones needed. Restrict access to the task bar and desktop (right clicking and all that). It left the pc "useless" for anything other than what they were supposed to use and by simply entering a user name and password, you could see/access everything again (without logging in and out of windows of course). Any ideas if there is something like this available for Windows 7?

I have tried playing with the built in features, but I always end up with a completely useless environment, because I block apps which need to run but should not be accessible (this machine is for recording and viewing a couple of IP cameras.)

Thanks,
R

Use local security policy type gpedit.msc u can choose to disable quite a few things like control panel changing wallpaper ect there plenty options to choose from

U type it in the run command windows xp and search programs and files windows 7

Group policy and a non administrative local user. If you have a sever that would be 1st prize else local group policy.

You would be surprised how little one can do without local admin rights.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies. As mentioned above, I have tried fiddling with Windows' own settings. I usually end up with a scenario where if I only allow them access to the one app they should be working with (the viewing client in this case) then it ends up blocking all the other apps/services starting up. If this is indeed the only course of action, then I would somehow have to setup the machine to startup with the admin login, start all services and then have the machine log out and in to a normal user profile ... all by itself of course.

I'll have to go scratch again and see what I can do.

Thanks,
R

Windows services start before user login so if you only restrict the user account it won't be an issue.
