Purely from a hardware point of view. NVIDIA & ATI couldn't exist in a linux led world. We'd still be using GeForce4 graphics cards if it were not for Microsoft and DirectX. Microsoft pushed the envelope so that, the hardware vendors had to match them. That directly translates and pours over into the Xbox, PS3 etc...

Fact is hardware wouldn't be where it is today if it were not for windows. The computing world would be allot different.

Microsoft's failures are not LInux's success.

1. It was a joke.

2. In Mandriva 2007, which I was playing with on Saturday, it was through the Control Centre; all point and click and took maybe thirty seconds on a OS that I'd just installed and am not too familiar with. It's no easier/harder than it would've been in windows.

@ShockG: Surprise, surprise. No one OS is the be all and end all (despite what you might think about Vista). I enjoy linux, and it works for me. I don't mind/care what you or anybody else uses. Use what works best for you.
 
No seriously, htf do you change the refresh rate in Linux? I keep hearing the *nix fraternity saying how easy the OS is yet when you put them to task it ends with alot of umming and aaaing.

How to change refresh rate in WinXP:

Right-click on Desktop -> Properties
Click on Settings tab -> Advanced
Click on Monitor tab -> Adjust from Screen refresh rate drop-down.

Now explain the steps in Linux to do the same thing like in uBuntu to make it simple.
 
If you don't have a net connection with Linux you're fawxed. with Windows you can still install games (other than HL-2) and work with office etc...

I can do anything except go online without an internet connection, even working on Office documents.

I never said Vista was the be all of all operating systems. Why are you getting angry for usability Linux can't match windows, period. Put all your distros in one bag and they still can't match Windows 2000 usability.

You have all this meaningless power and a true* multitasking OS and whatnot where you can't avoid using a command prompt at one time or another.
I know Vista isn't the best, never was and never will be, but for what it does it's better than Linux.

Fudzy, I explained how I did it on mandriva above; admittably not step by step because I can't remember off the top of my head. If you want to know ubuntu, I suggest trying www.ubuntuforums.org.

ShockG, I am not going to defend the command line against your preconceptions, except to say that if you don't want it or don't know how to use it, you don't have to.

I think you have some idea of Linux circa 2001. Try a current Linux distribution and I think you'll be surprised.
 
linux is rubbish

its such a mission to get silly things like your sound card working not to mention you cannot game unless you pay 49.99 dolla ayear for some kuk program that doesnt work half the time

windows is an all in 1 OS thats easy to use

Ubuntu (Hedgehog) as follows:

on panel, (taskbar) click system
click preferences
click screen resolution
select appropriate refresh rate (and resolution while you're at it) and apply

about as simple as Windows
 
Hmmmmm, I think this thread should be moved to the religious forum :p . Windows vs Linux is very much in the same league as pro life vs pro choice, evolution vs intelligent design etc. etc. :D :cool:

Um, Fudzy, my wife uses windows. She was wondering if it would be possible to change that ridiculously named "Start" menu, to something like "Menu" or maybe just to put that neat little windows icon there. I said I've heard that windows is so easy to use, but you know, I just couldn't figure it out? Maybe you Windows users could help me.

Also she said she was getting tired of the blue windows, and wondered if she could change then to something prettier, like brown :). I know on kubuntu its System Setting -> Appearance, but again I just couldn't figure it out on windows?
 
There, somewhere on the Internet, is a joke application which can change "Start" to "Fart"... :D

The same method can probably be used to change it to "Menu" although it will require a bit of tweaking... ;) :)

Windows'98se was bad like that.
 
XP, sorry I forgot to say.

She was thinking of upgrading to Vista and Office 2007, but I'm not so keen to take out a second bond.
