Tis the season to be... reformatting my pcs and re-installing software.
I have done this on 2 laptops (Sony 1.73Ghz and Compaq 1.73Ghz Centrino) and a desktop (Siemens 3.06Ghz) all with 512MB RAM.

Starting with original OEM versions of XP Home. Then loaded most of my software - Acrobat 8, Corel X3, Office 2007, Roxio EMC 9, Diskeeper, Windows defender etc.

Somewhere between this point and installing NOD32 antivirus and running Windows Automatic Updates, the systems (all 3) have begun to crawl at a snail's pace - very slow to open programs, IE7 etc., but OK speed once the program is open

Reg cleaning and removing NOD32 helped a lot, but still slightly slow. Any other AV (Kaspersky, BitDefender, AVG etc) and I am back in hell.

Any suggestions or solutions?

You can check all the start up programs with msconfig maybe several starting that dont need to be and you can also turn off the eye candy My computers > properties > advanced > performance > settings - adjust best performance and uncheck all the boxes.

Try Tune Up Utilities 2006, you can download the trial from www.tune-up.com - it fixes registry problems, gives a detailed list of programs that run at startup, etc.

Highly recommended. ;)

my advice is reload em with disk keeper and windows defender and see how you go

your pc's should be running fast because they fresh

click start run msconfig and untick anything that shouldnt start up

Have run TuneUp 2007. Also have latest drivers.
Have also check startup and disabled all the crap.
The problem was not there before I reformatted. Even after I reformatted, it was great. Not sure which program is the culprit.

Anyway, I was looking for a quick fix from you guys - not so.

I have created a basic image with all the drivers loaded using Paragon Partition Magic. I will reload and then load the software one by one, create images, and test. That way I will be able to get back to the last working image. Is time consuming, but no other option.

Only other thing I can think of, is if you've got hardware running in compatibility mode. Check Device Manager for any problems.

Suggestion: Check your win modem drivers. From experience these always cause sh*t. Try disable the win modem.

I found the bi***.

The culprit is Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional.
Adobe is beginning to copy validation checks from Microsoft. Their new programs are like ET - always wanting to phone home.
Re-installed it without giving it any privileges and stopped it from connecting on it's own to the internet.
System appears to be alright now.

Good for you!

First thing I check when installing new apps - untick the 'check for updates' (Nero Burning Rom, Cyberlink PowerDVD, TuneUp 2007, & more) . It already causes me enough pain that Norton wants to check for updates every 10 seconds! :(

Thats the one thing i dislike about reinstalling all software, after formatt, you have to go through each and every programs settings again, and, with this particular topic, shows exactly why you must do it after each installation.
