I have two drives the one has windows on it and the other i installed Suse 10.1

But here`s the problem, Suse works fine but windows will not boot.

Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling windows?

I have windows xp 64bit.

Let me know if you need more info.

You screwed up your master boot record, you will have to edit it, no idea on how to do it tho

I had a similar problem (although not 64bit) I downloaded a seperate grub program grub4dos.sourceforge.net

Boot with Windows XP CD.
Choose R) Recovery option
In DOS prompt type in fixmbr and fixboot

Thanks

i did the recovery thing but when i got to the dos promt i didn`t know what to do.
lol
:D

If this doesn`t work, anymore advice?

Just enter the following commands in the DOS box:

fixmbr <"press enter key">
fixboot <"press enter key">

His Suse installation wont work after that fix tho.

LOL...sorry but when I saw the heading I thought it was funny... :D

hopefully you got it sorted tho ??

you need to select a boot loader to use. Typically, in a Windows + Linux environment this will be the Linux loader (lilo or grub.) All you need to do is configure your boot loader to add the Windows installation as an option to boot.

If you fixmbr your machine, you'll lose the option to boot your SuSE installation. Only Windows will boot after that.

I find it strange that the SuSE installation didn't automatically add your Windows OS to its loader

There are a multitude of reasons why the bootloader can be confused or unable to load linux or windows. It might seem like the end of the world, but you can fix it with a little effort and a bit of reading.

Here is somewhere to start on your journey of fixing this...

You need to edit the bootloader's script to suit your system.

Enjoy! :)

When I use GRUB and select Windows from the menu it doesn't always boot. I sometimes need to press CTRL-ALT-DEL or power OFF/ON and then GRUB restarts. Haven't figured out why.
