Windows XP Blue Screen - can go no further

Hi all - before I resort to taking my pc in, thought I may try this forum again as I've had a lot of help here before.

Last night while browsing, suddenly got blue screen and cannot get passed it. Have tried safe mode and last good config, but just keep getting same blue screen. In safe mode, it gives the error "page_fault_in_nonpaged_area".

Have about 10gig drive space left. Have taken out the RAM - have 3 gig, and have put it back - a gig at a time to check if it is the memory. No go.

Any suggestions? Am staying in Bristol UK and repairs are hellishly expensive here so am willing to try anything first.

All help will be hugely appreciated.

Spec is:

Gigabyte m/b (quite an oldie) GA-81915PMD
Pentium 4 processor
NVidia GEforce 8600GT with 1 Gb RAM
3 Gig DDRII Ram
Seagate barracuda 7200 200 gig hard drive

I know it isn't the best of specs, but have tried to improve as best as I could.

Cheers,
Magenta2

Thank you. Excuse the ignorance ... but .... how do I boot from a cd and run memtest?
Busy replacing the video card now as it's easier to do - got a spare in the drawer.
Thanks for technet article.

Cheers

I've just tried new graphics card, no go. Have tried the 512 mb ram cards separately also no luck.

I really do appreciate the input. Thanks a lot.

bsods are usually easy to diagnose with replacement of hardware one step at a time.Software also plays a big part in bsods.
My advise is simple. When your pc boots up how many beeps do you hear.If you have a 3 beep combo:D check the the gcard.
Personally i think its HDD related error.Good luck and to run memtest you know you gonna have to run it for a while in case of heat problems.

ok if you still struggling try to run a live cd like pe or mini windows or even ubuntu. If you can get pass the bsod in this way then you have a driver related error which loads on start up from your harddrive

If you start windows in safe mode look at the bottom while its booting, if its a virus ECT. press F1 when you see the message (Remember the name it gives you, the message will probably be something like this " Do you want to load "name" (If you Press F1 it means no)... your windows will start normally, now search for the above "name" in your search box and delete it. Then restart your windows and it should start normally!
Sorry for spell errors im in a rush :p Goodluck

Not overly clued up on this, but you could also try booting to safe mode and going back to an earlier restore point.

Try resetting your cmos by removing the cmos battery (yeah, switch the machine off first!) and leave it out for 30 mins or more, then try booting - leave the battery out for the test.

The cmos battery will be a round coin looking thing on the motherboard, be careful with the clips.

What programs did you have running in the background when it first bsod'd? Or what programs do you typically have running in the background? If you can, try use a live cd, that should help you to figure out if its hardware or not. If you have the windows disk you can do a repair of windows, make it rewrite the vital OS files to boot with.

If the data is vital, take out the HDD and put it in a separate enclosure and hook it up to a working PC as a slave drive and back it up.

Know this is an old thread but I had the same issue this weekend.
Insert a Windows XP Cd and boot from it when the PC starts, run the repair and you will get to the MS Dos screen. Type "Fixboot" and enter, - this should solve the problem

has someone else had access (without you watching) to the PC ?

Does it start normally and then crash after a certain time ? or not start at all ?

Is it a new computer? Then Ram / slot might caused the problem.
I had the same problem with my computer, I switched me Ram to second slot, now it's working just fine.
