Windows XP firewall efficacy

How effective is Windows XP's firewall?
I just put a modem in bridge mode for my dad so it's XP versus the Internet.

I'd rather use the modem in router mode and trust the modem's own firewall. Even in the unlikely event that it isn't better than the Windows one, at least if it gets compromised the intruder is still one hop away from your dad's PC, with limited tools to go further.

I would prefer to have a modem in router mode than bridge mode, but that said, the SP2 firewall is pretty decent for stopping incoming traffic.
