Hi guys,

I'm trying to get a download with a Windows XP Pro install that has all the updates until current. I have my old Dell Laptop handy (and yes, I do have a legit key) and don't want to sit through the process of installing everything again (and downloading all the updates, wasting my cap)

Any idears?!

My guess would be to try and find someone that 1) has all the updates installed to date in the first place and 2)is willing to Ghost (or equiv) it for you. You can then transfer that image onto your clean PC and then change the product key to yours. **Mind you a Ghost image will be an EXACT replica of their environment at the moment it was made - regarding everything installed or set up, along with drivers and or settings. That would entail removing / adding apps, settings and drivers you need/dont need. Now that u mention it mayb its not that good idea :D:D

There are local sites with Windows XP SP3 - should take you close to latest.

Using AutoPatcher to keep your system/s up to date!

Yes, AutoPatcher was shut down for a while by Microsoft, but they are back and they now download the updates directly from the MS servers. The good news is you only need to do this once, and you will have a fully working AutoPatcher Folder...

1) Download the APUP engine file from their website. Unzip it to a folder. (ignore the false virus warnings - the file is quite safe).

2) Run the APUP engine and select the updates you want.

3) It will download the updates from the MS Servers and store them in a local folder.

4) Run AutoPatcher.exe to update your system.

5) Copy the entire AutoPatcher folder including APUP and AutoPatcher.exe to another computer and run it there to update.

6) You can re-run APUP.exe at any time to grab and merge the latest updates. Just re-run AutoPatcher.exe again to install the updates.

Use nLite and slipstream SP3 into your XP install media.

So he will have all the updates till SP3, I think AutoPatcher is a better option.

Yes, but there wont be that many and he can still use autopatcher in conjunction with it which will most likely go faster on any new install seeing there are less patches to apply.

If you can do the slipstream and have the technical know-how to get it right, that is a better option. Then AutoPatcher after that. AutoPatcher is great, but it would be even better to just apply the updates during the install.

unfortunately not free and for some reason was a non-option with me, I forget exactly why now.

What would be nice however is a method of backing up the existing OS updates when a re-install is the only option. Any ideas?

Using my computer at work which is connected to a WSUS server, I've had over a thousand patches applied to my system. Of course, some of them are for Office and .NET and the like, but core Windows patches still take up a ton.

As mentioned here, your best bet is to start with XP SP3 and work your way forward from there with AutoPatcher.
