There are lots of linux distros which you can boot from CD or USB to perform diagnosis. Ultimate Boot CD is what I use.

Don't bother. Rather troubleshoot your hw. If thats fine flatten the OS w/ reinstall.

I don’t even have the xp installation cd, My other computer has a Sata Hard drive, but there’s a Pata connecter on my Mother board,. Do i Just plug it in and try and boot of it, to rule out cpu problems, I know on Saturday my hard drive was infected with Trojan horses any danger of passing it onto my other computer

Iv hit yet another dead end I got hold of the original Hp recovery cds , The cd reformatted the hard drive , it then asked for the Hp operating system disk but the operating system disk is Microsoft Windows xp home and the system requires Xp Professional cd , Could i perhaps try a linux distro

Now when booting off the hard drive it asks for restore cd to go through the whole process again

So after some goole help I found that xp professional is the default setting after changing it my computer installed all the relevant drivers, I can only assume those viruses were worse than i thought got through Mse , now Iv had trouble with Norton, avg free and Comodo now only left is Avira to try. Thanks for all the help

If this is your torrent/download box why not just run linux on it?
