EDIT title: that should read AHCI not IHCA.--do not not know what went into my head then.

Hi there,

this may sound really stupid, but any case I will venture ahead.

I installed XP on my HDD that is a SATA drive and in the BIOS is listed as IDE--if I use the IHCA option XP does not load for installtion at all. I am dual booting with Windows 7 and for that I have to switch back to IHCA settings in the BIOS, otherwise the HDD runs slow.

I wanted to know if there was a way to instruct XP to also use IHCA--like install a patch or driver while inXP so it recognizes the drive when BIOS is set to IHCA and not IDE.

Any such luck?

Yes, thanks--did a search but came with many solutions. Thought I would ask someone who has thins done before on this forum.

The pcper solution seems to be the best bet--but, I am unable to get the thing working. I have a Intel Core i5 M 520 2.4GHz (Intel 5 series)--do you know where/how I could get the ahci.reg file for this?? May this is the problem.

Hey Hey

You have listed your CPU not your motherboard specs... the AHCI drivers are motherboard chipset based.

Here is a link to the iastore file and registry thing that has helped before.

http://filegooi.co.za/get2/104cc246d5d838106e9775e2f5cec4e2/Intel+AHCI.zip

Download it and then follow these steps... assuming that your BIOS is currently set to IDE mode.

In Windows XP ... extract the files above to an easy-to-find location, perhaps the desktop in an AHCI folder.
Maybe even create a System Restore Point before continuing...

Copy the "iaStor.sys" to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers" directory.
Right click on the included "Intel_AHCI_Merge.reg" and choose the "Merge" option
Reboot your system and in the BIOS enable AHCI, save and exit BIOS.
Boot into windows and you should be good to go.

Thanks will do this right now--am in Windows 7 (writing and editing my book).

How do I find out what my motherboard chipset is?

You will need to reboot and change to IDE in BIOS and then boot into XP... the .reg file is for an XP installation.

There are a number of ways to see, in Windows 7 your device manager will tell you... but you can download CPU-Z...

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

It is a nifty little free program that can ID this and more...
