Hi

I have an old pc running windows XP and I was thinking of upgrading to 7 or vista but I wasn't sure how smooth it would run if I only had 1GB of RAM. So in your opinion is windows vista or seven less demanding in terms of system resources compared to XP?

Specs are(Please try not to laugh:P):
Operating System
Windows XP Professional 32-bit SP3
CPU
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz 42 °C
Conroe 65nm Technology
RAM
1.00GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 533MHz (7-7-7-20)
Motherboard
FOXCONN G41MXE/G41MXE-K (Socket775) 40 °C
Graphics
Default Monitor (1440x900@60Hz)
1024MB ATI Radeon HD 5450 (MSI) 50 °C
Storage
148GB Seagate ST3160815AS (SATA) 41 °C
Optical Drives
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH22NS40
DTSOFT Virtual CdRom Device
Audio
AMD High Definition Audio Device

All specs came from Piriform Speccy

Avoid Windows Vista, the minimum requirements for 7 is 1GB, it should be good.

I had a laptop with 1GB DDR2 ram, 1.6GHz dual core and it ran smootly, i think it was faster than XP.

I tried running windows 7 on 512MB of ram, it worked, but it was **** slow.

Just found this on piriform, and just so you know the only things open are firefox, my cmputer and Piriform speccy:

Since it is DDR3 its easy for you to upgrade the RAM, windows 7 will then run more than adequately.

Sweet, gonna swing by Matrix warehouse tomorrow. P

S: my computer seems quite slow at times and I have to have old games like BF2 running at almost the minimum performance settings.

I remember back in 2009 I had the same pc but the graphics card was a 512mb nvidia and I can't remember the RAM(tho it did change) and I managed to run Crysis at high quality with no drops in FPS:O

I pray tell that those keys has been checked against the msdn keys, because I find it hard to believe that everyone is selling it above 1k and this dude like the chinese key resellers are magically below the mark. The previous key I got like this was a msdn key, perhaps one should run this by microsoft first... they have a simple reporting tool for this.

here we go... haven't used this method in a while:

I found some things that might help:

1. Something like this run from a command prompt would give you the Windows version:

cscript slmgr.vbs /dli >c:\version.txt

You could use this article to get it into the KBOX: http://intl.kace.com/support/resources/kb/article/Writing-Command-Line-Output

slmgr will work for Office too if you are using KMS for licensing.

2. Something like this might work too if it was installed on each machine. I think it's primarily for keys, but those should be separate as well for each type so it might help: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

ProduKey.exe /windowskeys 1 /officekeys 1 /iekeys 0 /sqlkeys 0 /exchangekeys 0 /extractedition 1 /scomma keys.csv
cscript.exe keys.vbs

3. It looks like you could also create a custom inventory rule that looks for this in Windows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Setup\PID

007 : retail
011 : upgrade
OEM : OEM
270 : Volume License
335 : Retail
640 : Volume License
648 : Academic

4. Product ID might work as well: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

A list I found here shows the following: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/18255-Windows-7-Channel-ID-portion-of-Product-ID

OEM - OEM SLP or OEM System Builder (MGAdiag will distinguish in the License Type field)
007 - VLK MAK
033 - Retail Windows 7 Home Premium
049 - VLK MAK
050 - Technet Plus Enterprise MAK
065 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Ultimate
066 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Ultimate
067 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Ultimate
074 - Retail Windows 7 Ultimate
112 - Retail Windows 7 Home Premium (conflicting info says MSDN)
177 - Retail Windows 7 Professional
220 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Professional
230 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Home Premium
231 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Home Premium
292 - Retail Windows 7 Ultimate?
293 - Retail Windows 7 Ultimate? (maybe Academic)
339 - Retail Windows 7 Home Basic
838 - Technet/MSDN/Bizspark Windows 7 Professional
896 - Retail Windows 7 Home Basic N
929 - Retail Windows 7 Home Basic E
956 - Retail Windows 7 Ultimate (Genuine Advantage store?)

5. There is also a VBscript that might help here: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61080-how-to-detect-license-type-of-windows/

it is possible that they are genuine retail keys and someone got their hands on pile of Windows 7 retails boxes that was sold cheap. That carbonite thread specifically states that these are genuine retail keys. If they are indeed MSDN keys, then we will know soon when WGA kicks in after Microsoft blacklists the MSDN account and all linked keys.

I agree with you that it looks very suspicious considering that Windows 7 Pro is being sold for only R480. The other issue is that most MSDN keys check out as retail anyway so it will be very difficult to confirm 100% if the key is retail or MSDN retail. The WGA message popup will most probably be the moment of truth.

My MSDN keys come back as VLK MAK

The poster on Carbonite will also provide the certificate of authenticity on request with the keys and he would've been banned from there long ago if it was dodgy in anyway

The ad on Carbonite says that the keys are digital and proof of authentication is available on request. Then it later says that there are no COA's but screenshots are available of the key's validity. I'm not sure what that means but a "retail" without COA sounds suspicious.

I bought 40 keys from senshi (20x windows7 and 20 office 2013 pro plus). I did experience problems with the office 2013 pro plus keys that did not want to activate. Did speak to senshi about it and he quickly sorted it out for me. In fact it was only 5 keys that was faulty and he is busy getting me replacement keys for them. Spoke with him last night and all got sorted (no bull****).

Thanx Senshi

Have you ever heard about someone who could not activate their keys they got from microsoft? Yes? No?

I call it bull****: Unless a valid conformation comes directly from Microsoft SA themselves.

Even at wholesale level its not that cheap, If check any of my suppliers then they would need to sell it under R450 for me to put my markup on. Are you saying that everyone that resells ms on retail level are adding 1 000 as markup? seriously?

For example:

So which version of the key does he resell:

OEM, DSP, VLK, Technet, Retail, MSDN, Student, Russian?

Update:
Seems Senshi was banned...

Here is my take on what is happening: He is reselling the education licenses.

So its neither OEM, DSP, VLK, Technet, Retail or MSDN. Still waiting on that ms verification, directly and locally from ms themselves ;)
