If there is anyone here who has successfully, without too much hassel managed to get connected using Windows98 please mail me exactly what you did so I can forward it on to the many queries I get.
I setup a Win98 machine at work, but after doing a 1000 things to it I eventually got it to work but I cannot remember exactly what made it work [:D]

Im a Win98 SE user - (I prefer knowing exactly where all the backdoors on the OS I use are :P )

in terms of setting up - it couldnt be simpler -
assuming, you have your CAB files stashed on your HD, so that if/when Win needs something, it knows to just tug the dll's straight from the folder - otherwise users might be confronted with 'insert Win98 cd' type messages, midway through the install, which would screw the pooch I think..

set up modem and have it ready, not plugged in.. insert CD, it autoruns, do installation, win picks up new dll's needed, and grabs them from CAB files, point X is reached where Sentechsoftware says 'okay, plug in USB thing' You do. finish off install menu.. close that.. then either at this point, put in l/p into the two tabs in the dialler software, and if you want to help the registry setup, eject install cd, restart, then fire up modem software and connect..

Most users probably dont have the win98 cab files stored - so I can see this causing a hiccup in the setup, as midway through install-process, they have to eject sentech disk and put in win98 original disk - and windows at this point may not know why you're doing this, or pick up that it needs dll's.. hence the route of copying the win98 dir off CD onto HD, and at this point just pointing PC towards that folder on HD..

hope this helps :)

LoneGunman, thank you very much for the explanation.
Could you please elaborate on the point then either at this point, put in l/p into the two tabs in the dialler software

Basically what I did was do the installation as normal.
Btw I have installed the modems on several W2k and WxP machines without a hitch.
After installation and rebooting PC on request it just refused point blank to connect. It would see the modem, show the signal strength etc, but thats as far as it would go.

I then ran the patch found on the CD at Patches\TCP\Win98\236926usa8.exe
After that it also installed another USB driver and it immediately connected and took me to the Registration screen and I registered.
At this point I thought I was in business, but it wasn't long and I got disconnected.
Then via our LAN I went to M$ Windows updates and updated everything, took about 3 hours.
It now connects but after several tries (maybe 10 or so) and does not disconnect once on, but I feel this is a unsatisfactory condition as I like the clients machine to be 100%
Btw signal strength is fullscale and all cab files are always in C drive in Win98 folder, a standard practice of mine as I develope in Win98 [:)]

okay, I'll interrupt my saturday night 'Learn Klingon Lessons and Yoghurt eating-while watching Titanic sink' (yes I suck badly, but hey I like me :)

umm, you said elaborate after 'then either at this point, put in l/p into the two tabs in the dialler software..

okay..
at this point, you have multiple tabs in the dialler modem software in which stuff can be written - mainly in the NETWORK and ISP tabs- (think it has something like 'sentechuser' or something as default - here one needs to put your correct username/password in both, if the software doesnt stupidly auto-connect before you've managed to do it, taking you I think, to the web-based log-on page.

re the 'restart' mention:
What I did most times, was not restart, but fiddle around online, enjoying the fact that I was online.. so although I mentioned a restart, it isnt really necessary - usually a required restart is just bad programming where coders want to make sure the new data writes in the registry properly and that the app starts with lots of ram.. so if you manage to get online straight off, perhaps a windows update at this point is in order immediately, especially if its a win98se machine which hasnt been online previously..
You mentioned a three hour-ish update session, shouldnt have been that long - either the linespeed was slow, or else half the win98se machine's OS was missing :)

(I didnt need any further patches or updates, but I did go from a fully installed TCP-IP protocol for modem, to the MyWireless setup, and seemed to have everything necessary..

but the main thing is: install the proggie, and plugin and either restart to let windows 'see' the new app - and at this point put in the required l/p in the NETWORK/ISP tabs on the dialler software - or else, finish the install and see if you can just get online immediately without any restart - I've done the install both ways and it pretty much worked ok either way..
Also, given the tiny size of the install, its not a train wreck to uninstall, restart and re-install - its taken about 5 -10 minutes max, which compared to the hours and hours with Megawan previously, makes the sentech setup very sweet and not at all forbidding when something goes wrong..

It does occur re the win98's not connecting outward, that maybe one of the things below might be playing a part
a) make sure the machine has no firewall, or if it does, that the modem's 'allowed' traffic and server rights
b) check what other protocols are in place in the Network section, and if there're a whole bunch of odd or unknown protocols, one of them could be fighting and conflicting..
also the fact that tcp updates for windows were needed, maybe the bios needs a lookthrough, ditto the ports (in case this is either an old machine or a machine that's had some ports blocked for other purposes and these blocks have been left in place, without the user knowing..

hope some of the above is of use..

Thanks, I'll follow your instructions on monday 1st thing [:)]
