Hi there

Have two laptops, one a Dell, other an HP.

Both uses the Broadcom 440x onboard NIC.

WindowsXp sends packets, but doesn't receive any.

When I boot into Knoppix, the NIC works, it is an software issue with poxy Windows.

Antivirus is uninstalled, no firewall is enabled.

Any ideas?

Thanks

How are they connected? If its a crossover cable make sure your cable configuration is correct

The laptops are connected on a LAN. When I boot into Knoppix to copy the files over (backing up prior to an reinstall) I can access the network, so the physical hardware is working - so this is definitely a Windoze problem.

Hi Libs (are you also the The_Librarian on the smoothwall forums?)

Does the NIC activate in XP? Does it have a hardcoded IP address or does it use DHCP, and if so, does it successfully acquire an address?
What does ipconfig /all (in a command-prompt window) say?

Can you ping another machine from the XP machine? ... TCP/IP networking is much easier to debug than winderz networking ...

Until a ping is working there's not much point in trying other stuff (imho)

If you are using winxp try turning on simple file sharing

explorer - tools - folder options

Then click on view scroll down and make sure simple file sharing is ticked

@ SecretCode - yes, I'm that Librarian as well :D:D

but I can't access the smoothwall community at the moment - international's bonkers again.

Ok, what happens :

when I run ping 192.168.0.234, it gives me the following :
Unable to contact IP driver, error code 2

When I run ipconfig (and either the /renew or /release switches) it gives the following :
An internal error occurred : The request is not supported.

Please contact Micro$oft.

Additional info : Unable to query host name.

Also, when I try an static Ip address, it also won't work. (I made sure that the static addy is not in use as well...)

If the machine is sending but not receiving packets, make double sure that the Windows XP Firewall is NOT active. As it is sending packets, that means Windows is detecting the card, and detecting that the cable is connected.

Is the cable connected at 10 or 100MB? If at 100, try forcing it to 10MB, to see if that fixes the problem. If it works at 10MB, then update the NIC drivers. Also check that the cable is 100%. XP networking is not as fault tolerant as MS would like you to believe.

If these don't work, we will probably need more detail

But an hardware issue can be ruled out as I am copying the files over with Knoppix at the moment, in preparation for a reformat and reinstall.

I'm an old hand at this - tried all the options - forcing it to 10Mb half duplex, reinstalling the NIC drivers, and so on.

I've also downloaded and tried the winsock fix utilities, to no luck.

xp sp2: type in
netsh winsock reset
at the command prompt.

Got this off Experts-Exchange

go to registry

remove both winsock and winsock 2 entries

reboot comp

go to lan properties..install...internet protocol tcpip...choose have disk ..type in the path c:/windows/inf in the file location section

reboot comp again after installation

try the ping again

Ta guys, willl try it after Knoppix finished copying files over...

27Gb's of data...

I was unable to access experts-exchange as somehow our international is bollixed up... *sigh*

Failsafe method. Follow these instructions.

1. Place Laptop on desk.
2. Open CDROM.
3. Insert Knoppix Disk.
4. In the menus, is an Option "Install to Hard Drive" Follow procedure given.
5. Problem solved

:)

Else, most of the international forums that list the problem were only solved by a reinstall.

One last ditch though, is try this link.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299357
If your International won't let you access that, I can mail you the content of the page. It basically all about resetting the TCP/IP stuff. (Uninstall, reinstall TCPIP)

What does Device Manager say about the NIC (like properties > general tab > "This device is working properly")? What does Network Connections say about the Local Area Connection? - Presumably you've been able to use it if you were able to assign a static IP address.

I'm suspecting a driver problem rather than an IP stack problem (since you've tried all the stack reset things).

Do both the Dell and the HP show the same problem? That would seem a bit weird ... presumably the onboard NIC is supported by Windows. Just to be dumb, have you tried different LAN cables? A different hub/switch?

... Have you tried uninstalling the NIC in Device Manager, rebooting and reinstalling it?

Any normal help desk would by this point have said "reinstall windows".

And btw, since I have had to reinstall windows to fix network errors (after trying netsh int ip reset and everything) - do you have any VPN or other firewall software on your machine? CheckPoint secureclient eventually destroyed networking on my machine.

Are both laptops using same version of XP?? If not then enable net bios over tcp/ip on both laptops. You can find this under Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) when you right click and goto properties on the LAN connection.

Otherwise maybe try look into DNS problems, although surely you should be able to ping one laptop from the other. If you can get a ping but still cant receive data then it could be a DNS resolve issue. DNS assigns the pc name to an ip address of every pc.

Make sure you are using a crossover cable when making a direct connection. Crossover supports 100mbps and is required for direct connections (direct cable is a waste anyway:) only 10mbps unless you have a HUB). Also try replacing the cable to see what happens.

Lastly are you assigning static ip's correctly....make sure you are giving each laptop a unique ip in the correct range ie...192.168.0.1-100 for example. And set the next option to 255.255.255.0 as its default and not necessary to play around with. The third row can stay blank.

Only the standard Windoze VPN client - nothing else.

Seems a reinstall is the only way to go then...

The other lappy seems to be working... <touch wood>
