I'm planning on moving to a 100% linux solution for my desktop within the next few months. I'm absolutely repulsed by Vista! I work on Windows XP, the greatest Windows version ever released, but I've migrated all my development work to Linux based solutions already. I run Apache, PHP and MySQL on Windows XP. The main reason I use Windows XP now is for the games! When Vista launches, I'm moving to Mandrake!

bdt,

Yup, you definitely make excellent points. I have just gotten so used to buying a piece of equipment which had the necessary XP drivers on it versus searching for a Linux driver (if required!).

I do run Ubuntu 6.06 dual-booted with XP. There are the one or two things that I miss when in Ubuntu that I find easier in XP to do, but I struggle on :)

Chandler looks stunning! I really didn't know about it at all. I have looked at Cinelerra before, but there was something about it's hardware requirements at the time that scared me away. OR, more likely, I didn't read properly. I was using a good package in XP at the time and could not find something for Linux.

As for the updates and security patches. Again, an excellent point. XP does download a *huge* amount. It also gives me the creeps over my capped line since I had to reinstall MCE three times this month with it downloading the same stuff three times!

I think the bottom line is a thing of how you look at the entire experience. Again, I am a Linux advocate, but I do miss my XP at times :)

For an amazing new paradigm as a desktop/GUI alternative, take a look at SymphonyOS, specially the Mezzo Desktop concept ...and then tell me if, short of some really intensive digging (which means far from mainstream), you can find something like this for 'doze?

Nic777 u hit the nail on the Head - whats the point of going to Linux when u want it to behave like Windows.Maybe its a imagine thing.Maybe some ppl think if they use Linux they cooler then Windows users .Use Windows XP for entertainment , Use Linux for Servers.KDE and GNOME are **** compared to Windows XP GUI.Remmember the Windows XP GUI is more mature, faster and less buggy then KDE/GNOME.Linux is all about the command line.If you dont use go back to Windows

you can achieve that with shell replacements tho sadly alot of them are buggy and others resource intensive :/ and some just don't work so lekker. e.g. litestep
