I have to replace my windscreen ("Shatterprufe") which I have had about a year, the new windscreen picked up two chips (right and later left) at the edge and they both became huge cracks.

Long story short, I asked PG and Glassfit if there is anything that can be added to a windscreen that will reduce the risk of a crack near or at the edge of the windscreen.

PG said "SmartShield" and Glassfit said yes but they don't do it themselves (it is also a film that gets fitted to the windscreen).

Has anyone got any experience with these layers of protective film, do they really work (is it just an expensive gimmick/scam)?

Do they cost more than my R350 excess for a windscreen repair?

+ free chip repair.

If you call your insurance they normally send someone to come fix the chip before it spreads. Then you don't need to replace it very often.

This.

I wouldn't add a plastic film that would mar and scratch from grit with the wipers over time. Don't do it.

Windscreen replacement has minimal excess, and with some policies no excess is required. Just replace it through insurance.

Sorry - when I say repair I mean replacement.
Last year, my excess for replacing the windscreen was just under R1.7k, I did get cash quotes at the time from both PG and Glassfit, PG was slightly less expensive, this time it seems Glassfit is less expensive for Shatterproof (I think Shatterprufe is a PG only brand).

As far as insurance claims go, it seems both PG and Glassfit inflate the cost substantially compared to the cash quotes.

Just looking at my policy now - mine is 10% of claim, minimum R350.

This might be the one that Glassfit mentioned:

I did not get the details from Glassfit as I first need to make a decision between PG and Glassfit for the replacement.
