So, I'm going to a fancy dinner soon and I've been asked to provide straw wine.

I didn't know what it was or where to get it, but I've looked it up and see that I can get it at Makro among other places. It is however pretty expensive.

How much straw wine do you need per person?

Its not as strong as port, but it is very sweet. They sell it in 375ml bottles and there are 8 of us at this dinner, so I'm thinking I'll need 2 x 375ml bottles.

Right? Or do you only have a little taster of it?

It is rather sweet, I think two bottles should be more than enough for 8 people. Why specifically straw wine? The last time I had some I couldn't muster more than a sip or two.

You sure the host isn't asking you for wine with straws? Just one of those little Robertson boxes with a bendy straw for each guest, job done!

Please buy this as a joke, and keep the other bottles in the car :D

Well worth it :D

You know you're growing up in a poor area when you see an empty bottle of methylated spirits lying under a tree ... with a straw in it. I kid you not, I saw that as a kid in George. Scarred me for life.

It's quite similar to muscadel and port - a desert wine. Two bottles should definitely suffice. Look for something from Calitzdorp, they are famous for their sweet wines.
