I drove past a wine farm near Durbanville today, and their board advertising Wine Tasting had a sign above it saying ' soon to be illegal '.

Anyone know what this is about ?

Maybe they're making advertising alcohol illegal like they did with ciggies?

I heard that it has to do with:
- Something about it cannot be free anymore.
- Something about alcohol is a controlled substance and is sold, not given.
But, it's all a big hoohaa, charge us R5 and lets get on with it.
*hic*

Well Wine Festivals, like Wacky Wine in the Robertson area, charges an amount of money for a glass, then you can taste as much wine as you want at any of the cellars taking part... So its not free... ;)

Besides a lot of cellars already charge you money, some as little as R5... But only if you DONT buy a bottle, so all you do is buy a R25 bottle ;) So then its free...

This is stupid, so many ways to circumvent the problem... *Spelling*

I liked the 'buy a glass' idea. It makes for a fine, useful souvenir.

So if my mates come 'round to my pub for a (free) beer, it's illegal? Bullschmidt.

The new DA govt. in the Western Cape should fight this. It's prejudicial to the province's economic interests.

How does the national government get off with regulating this sort of thing, anyway? Is wine tasting really a matter of national significance? Don't they have better things to do?

Yet another inpingement on what is essentially "whitey pursuits" by the ANC. Expect more cutbacks on your freedoms courtesy of Zuma

Here is racial twist to the thread which is otherwise about booze. SNAP!

Very possible :( I like windhoek ads.

It might be as the law will see you as the owner of a business and your friends as the consumers... But I agree its bullschit

It has to do with the new western cape liquor bill, a totally ridiculous and not practical bill.

Here is one article: http://www.mg.co.za/article/2008-10-09-sab-rattles-sabre-over-cape-liquor-bill

The Bill seeks to control the proliferation of bars in residential areas, and to crack down on retailers and distributors who supply illegal shebeens.

Here is another article: http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=125&art_id=vn20081112114000789C109032

The Western Cape provincial parliament has passed the provincial Liquor bill which promises revolutionary ways of dealing with the sale, supply and regulation of alcohol.

Now it's up to premier Lynne Brown to sign the bill into law within 45 days.

The bill, supported by all parties except the African Christian Democratic Party, has been in the making for seven years.

Last year, the legislature passed the bill, but ex-premier Ebrahim Rasool failed to sign it within the 45 days prescribed by the provincial constitution.
