can this motherboard get an AM2 cpu, by either it being upgradable like it is or can i get the bios flashed to support it ?

I think this is a socket 939 motherboard - what is the model number, example: K8N Pro

I had one of those, damn thing always messed up my favorite screen saver and WinAmp visualisations with graphics corruption.

Anyway, it should be socket 939. If the RAM is DDR400 its 939 and cannot use AM2 processors...

No it is a socket 939. what socket am i looking for in an AM2 then.? and what nice motherboard should i be looking for?

I seem to have the same mobo.

Were you able to figure out what CPU to upgrade with? I'm looking to upgrade myself, hopefully with a dual core Athlon 64X2. What should I be looking out for? Is it worth upgrading with this mobo, or should I get a new mobo too?

Current system:

AMD Athlon 64, 1800 Mhz clock (9x200) 3000+
Winfast C51MCP51 Mobo
2 x 512 MB DDR 333 Memory
nVidia 8600GT 512 MB DDR2

I'm getting another 1GB DDR 800 RAM. Would it be worthwhile upgrading the CPU or do I need upgrade CPU and Mobo.

Any advice appreciated.

BTW, Winfast don't manufacture motherboards. I suspect you have a rebranded Biostar or Foxconn mobo - maybe download and run SiSoft Sandra and see if it gives any additional info about your mobo.
Does your board look like this (also see specs from Foxconn) :

If you currently have DDR 333 memory, then you won't be able to use DDR2 800 - they are different modules - you would need to find the same DDR 333 or DDR400 memory - your board will not take DDR2 800 memory, only up to DDR 400

As for CPU compatibility, any socket 939 CPU should fit theotetically, but your board may need an updated BIOS, if they released one. The max. available S939 Athlon X2 CPU was the 4800+ X2.
The Foxconn CPU Support list is here.
Their Memory Support list is here.
You can also consider S939 Opteron CPU's, but check your board first...

Hi Howard,

Thanks for your help :)

I've checked the motherboard and found the model number on a sticker: 6150K8MA-8KRS (you were not far off - thank you).

I tried the RAM last night, and again you are correct (should have asked before buying, but the techie said it would) the DDR2 is 240pin and the M?B only takes 184pin memory.

I'm starting to think that maybe it has come time to replace my M/B and CPU. What is your opinion?

Any recommendations? (Keeping in mind that I know have 2GB DDR 2 667 and a Geforce 8600 GT 512MB).

Thanks again.

It looks good. Thank you. I'm curious why you recommended the CPU though. What makes the black edition different?

Well the black edition has unlocked multiplier so it's easier to overclock. Not the reason I chose it though.

That cpu is phenom based. Not Athlon based. Performs more or less on the level of a 3.2Ghz Athlon.
