WINNERS - Xiaomi AX3000 Mesh System

Received my package yesterday, thanks MyBroadband!

Congrats, chaps! We shall await your reviews within the fortnight

It's not off to a good start... I started up the first unit last night with the idea of getting one up and running and configuring it for my current network environment before starting the mesh. Once connected to the internet it did a firmware update and that's where things... how should I put this, went poo-poo. Wifi dropped and did not come back. I connected a pc via ethernet to check what was going on and the router was up and running and seemed fine, Wifi was on and SSID not hidden, set to full power and all that but there's just no Wifi signal to pick up. Tried factory reset from software, tried resetting using the hardware button. There's just nothing. Then we had loadshedding so I went to bed.

This morning I've been trying to play around with it in AP mode since I'm back on my old network for work purposes. I tried resetting it again and then I checked the unit underneath to see if I can get the details for the default network and entering them manually. I saw a qr code and brought my phone closer to scan it, and the phone picked up the extremely weak Wifi signal. Move back 30cm, signal gone.... Not great signs for a Wifi mesh system. So if the phone is right next to the router, I get 1 bar signal.

Also haven't managed to put the unit into repeater mode of any sort so I can't get it to access internet either without plugging directly into the ONT.

I guess I will play around with it again tonight. Haven't bothered to boot up the second unit and even attempt meshing. Seems the firmware update broke something. I'm wondering if there is a way to revert to an older firmware - though the older firmware doesn't have S.A. listed as a region which from what I read seems to have other implications for the Xiaomi apps and eco system, or something.

Curious if @zahpat is having a better time of it?

And then suddenly....

It's back. Didn't do anything. Just left the little unit to its own devices and this morning there was a gloriously powerful Wifi signal. Firmware is still the same version too, so it's not that, I think. I have since booted the second unit, updated the firmware and meshed via ethernet cable and it is working fabulously now. I haven't done actual signal strength comparisons but I've tested in a couple of locations where the Wifi usually used to be spotty, and bar the bathroom inside the main bedroom, the signal seems to be better than what I got with my previous Huawei AX3 mesh system (also 2 units). I'll have to switch routers and check what Fing says about the signal strength sometime.

Only issue now is that I can't power the Xiaomi from my Ratel UPS since it uses a different size dc plug, will have to get that figured out.
