Winnie Madikizela-Mandela on Wednesday said it was wrong for the ruling party to prosecute ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader Julius Malema for continuing the struggle.

The ANC stalwart was speaking after she testified in Malema’s disciplinary hearing.

He is accused of sowing divisions and bringing the party into disrepute for his remarks on regime change in neighbouring Botswana.

Madikizela-Mandela said the youth leader was simply continuing the anti-apartheid struggle.

“The struggle was all about the land and that is why we fought in this country - we fought for the return of the land,” she said.

The veteran politician said there was good reason why people were angry with government.

“Yes, we have made great strides but there is so much that needs to be done and the youth must be allowed to be vocal,” added Madikizela-Mandela.

She also compared Malema’s ANC charges to the AfriForum case involving the Dubula iBhunu songs.

The ANC's disciplinary panel will hear closing arguments next week.

What else could have been expected from her. Didn't Apartheid end in 1994?

One Criminal defending another? Why am I not in the least surprised?

Yep... Juju's big hitters... Winnie and Tony Yengeni who didn't make it. Such fine, upstanding members of our community throwing their weight behind him. His parents must be so proud... *eish*

I though the anti-apartheid struggle was for a better lives for all. This included basic human rights.... I wonder if the masses really have a look now and again at Zim and see what good land does without skilled people to operate it.

Winnie is the a poison to reconciliation in this country

Can someone please explain this to my feeble mind...

Why is the ANCYL/Malema hearing being orchestrated as if it's an actual court case? Calling witnesses and whatnot sounds all too dramatic. It's an internal disciplinary hearing for what I consider to be an employee(s) of a party. I appreciate the fact that it is open to media coverage, but aren't they overdoing it just a little?

It boils down to there being no such thing as bad publicity.

Unfortunately it also smacks of the political trials held in communist countries. Not that I am saying that the little turd shouldn't be disciplined, it just shows what a single party state would look like here.

Mamma Matches & Porky-Ché make a good team actually, they're both criminals masked as revolutionaries & both are stuck in the 1980's where apartheid gave them their reason for existence.

Speaking of criminals, anything happen to the accusations of the Malema mansion being financed with tender kickbacks?
Probably a good indication of the ANC's character that everyone's more concerned with Malema's discipline case than the fact that he steals from the people.

The ANC's comeback queen might just hitched her wagon to the wrong horse - this one is going straight to jail! Same for Tokyo Sex-whale!
