For the record, here's Microsoft's full statement on the subject: "Microsoft remains committed to making the transition to Windows 7 easier for all customers. With tools, guidance, and the work we're doing with industry partners it is our belief that this will be an improved process . Furthermore, we expect most customers who upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 will be doing so through the purchase of a new computer, thereby making the upgrade virtually effortless. That said, Windows XP customers planning to upgrade to Windows 7 will need to perform a clean installation."

I will wait for SP 2 to release on windows 7...
Safer and Better

They probably ensuring it is a clean install so windows 7 appears fast and fresh for the first two days until u have put on all your applications and are still battling to get your printer 2 b seen and ofcourse no sound bcause some manufacturers will not even know about windows 7.

Umm... how can you upgrade an OS that is nearly 10 years old without breaking something? A clean install is the only viable option. Also most people still running XP might not have 7 capable hardware.

Clean install is the only way to upgrade an OS anyway IMO. Your hdd just ends up a mess otherwise.

Lol @ Windows 7 Install help. I put the disk in and clicked the little help icon on the bottom left to see if I meet the requirements. Ok ... so the requirements weren't there so here's holding thumbs that a Sempron LE-1100, 1GB Ram and an 8600GT works fine ... but the funny part is the install instructions still say Vista :p

Or maybe they are ensuring that you have the correct versions of drivers and software installed?

me and my friend tested windows 7 today and was impressed. Would definitely consider the upgrade to windows 7 when it's released. Even if I need a clean install looks worth it.

The release of Windows Vista SP2 (Windows 7) is a great way for M$ to end XP altogether. Remember with each new OS release your licence includes a 'downgrade' to the previous version, so XP included a 2K licence, and Vista includes an XP licence. With SP2 aka Windows 7, M$ will finally be rid of that
loophole as the millions of sheeple who upgrade to Win 7 and new buyers of computers will only be able to go back to Win Vista SP1 or stay with SP2 (Win 7). It's an amazing tactic, not to mention that they're selling a Service Pack
as a new OS. M$ PR is spinning everything :).

But people will still take it up their rear ends for Microsoft.

So who's downgrading from XP to Win7 (Vista SP2) around here? Certainly not me.

Dude wake up and smell the coffee, the days of XP are over. 7 is not going to be a failure.

Using a decade old OS is nothing to be proud of.
