Wireless 1024K, Uncapped, R497 pm, Seriously?

512 or 384 K

Hi there. Speed is a non issue for us. It doesn't cost money. Bandwidth does. And please keep in mind it already takes us 12 years and 16 months to recover the cost on the hardware we buy for our clients, that's before we make a cent of profit. We use high quality gear only. So it will take forever (a telkom response year to the n-th degree) before we actually make money from a client at the reduced rates you suggest. We could not be in business and consequently, nobody gets ANY half decent (read brilliant) solution. We could make a few exceptions if you really must have that kind of package at a capped rate and a 2 year contract. Will have to talk to guys to see if possible but if you keen, let me know anyway.

Ok people, you heard it from the providers themselves. Isn't this what I have been saying all along? Now why would Telkom want us believing differently?

A question for Deon. Why are almost all the Wisps in Cape Town and when will there finally be some real options in Gauteng? Why not have an option for second grade or lower quality gear for the people that can't afford to pay for high quality right now?

Maby because CPT is easier to cover?

But hey its not all good... most of the good WISP are in the blerrie noordelike voorstede. Oh well, if you ever reach out to the Southern Suburbs, around Bergvliet/Constantia I'd be up for it. Especially with P2P between the network, should be able to get quite a bit of good stuff for no cost then and the speeds could be better right? Inter tower speeds must be at least around 4mb.

XCLUSIV make sure you add to your site what your product allows and does not allow.

I can see with downloading and uploading with p2p that will cause problems.

So fellows no p2p(isos,demos,movie trailers,etc)

what about p2p,voip and ftp.

Arrrgh! I need more speed, screw Telkom's takes for ever to install adsl.

As soon as we here from skrewbaIl's friends report,I`m signing up.

Sometimes you just have to take a chance.

*drool 6gb*

(where should I post this?)

Guys which internet products have been the best and worst for P2P, i'd love to know.....will it work great with my wireless product? *dare i mention the name here ?*

Thanks

Demo's and movie trailers are available off the web. no need for p2p for that.

I think you meant to say no pr0n, music, TV EPS, full cracked games etc.. lol

But with inter network bittorrent it should pretty much be okay, between around 1000 people and growing ( by the time they get to southern s im geusseing) you should be able to get almost everything you want as long as people share.

Its not the speed of P2P thats the problem. Its the way most P2P protocols generate tons and tons of pointless traffic.
Tiny packets, and most P2P programs dont obey the "gentlemans rules" of TCP/IP.

But there are some programs claiming very efficient use of bankwidth.

Some, but how many people use these programs. I for one dont know which one to use for most efective bandwidth use. I would geuss souseek, because it is much smaller, but the way they do searches cuaes quite a bit of traffic.

I do understand this though, especially for a wireless product, they cant really handle tons of small packets and info being sent all the time, latency will just suck even worse.

Ayway, an intertower bittorrent is an amazing idea, i think. Why dont some of the bigger players ie. iburst or sentech do this? It would be great, make the service 100 times more valuable.

Ok, cant give you too many tests, works killing me slowy (as usual) and I cant go visit my buddy with the new connection anytime soon.

He did 2 speed tests though, here are the results dont at 1:30pm...

Your line speed is approximately 701.9 Kbps or 86 kBytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

If you have any relativly easy tests you would like me to pass on to him, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Hi

Just a quick note from the technical side as to what is going on. At least Xclusiv will get a reputation for long winded posts!

I spend a lot of time reading these forums and take note of what people are saying. This is what it seems people want: A broadband internet connection with no connection fee, running at 2048mbps guaranteed with unlimited traffic and capabality for simultaneous voice video and data, costing no more than R300 per month.

Now I agree thats what I want too, but barring an april fools joke or somebody in gubbamint or telskum suffering a brain hemorrhage I doubt we are going to see this in the next 5 years.

So here is the deal and what we do: We have for a number of years been providing data wirelessly to a number of corporates who have no DSL or similar service in their area and have no hope of getting similar in the near future. In order to do this we have built up a decent wireless network covering a reasonable portion of Cape Town. Since we have plenty of spare bandwidth available on our highsites, we decided to attempt to provide a service at a reasonable price to the end user. The idea of the service is that we would not hard or soft cap users provided they respected the network and what they were getting and did not abuse it. So maybe one month you need to dowload the latest Linux distro plus a couple other things and you do 15 Gigs. Maybe next month is quiet and you do 3-4 gigs. On average as long as your monthly downloads are not excessive we will not complain. As long as the total bandwidth of all our users does not go beyond limits that would make it no longer cost effective we will run the service and nobody will get hard or soft capped.

If however you are the user type who demands his 1024k continuosly day and night and intends doing 3gB per day, maybe this is not the service for you. Feel free then to get adsl 1024 @ R680 per month before bandwidth costs, then pay R75 per gig on average for SAIX bandwidth (I would not recommend IS currently as you will only probably get around 300-400kbps on a 1024k account)

As to setup costs, we install a dedicated Routerboard system running Mikrotik RoutOS with a high quality antenna which can vary in size and cost depending on location and geography at each one of our clients. This represents an enormous cost to ourselves, and if you are not prepared to sign a 6 month contract we cannot possibly take you on as a serious client. The R1100 setup fee covers the subcontractors we employ to do installations, and includes all fixed items like cabling, mounting hardware, masts etc. We pretty much dont see any of that. As to using your own equipment, that would interfere hugely with the smooth operation of our RouterOS system, and would decrease the possible bandwidth available to all. Also we are gearing up for 5.8 Ghz and having the Routerboards installed allows us to do upgrades like this with minimal client impact.

Currently we do not allow peer to peer systems ouside of our network, but this is also negotiable and we are considering putting another line in which will be purely a best effort service for peer to peer. Maybe you 512k, maybe you get 64K, at least you can get your programs down eventually. Inside the network is a different story, where we can offer p2p between users at anywhere up to 5mbps.

As to whether we run IS uncapped ADSL - that would be tempting but it would hardly make sense to spend tens of thousands on infrastructure and then waste it on dodgy bandwidth (perhaps we will install something like this for the guys wanting p2p - this is still under discussion)

So in closing we are not SA's answer to low cost unlimited bandwidth, we are just a company who has done some careful calculations and have put a lot of technical effort into providing a fast browsing and mail service with good download speeds for the average user, and done so at a reasonable price.

Hi BeeDee

Why not allow for a self-install option. And I don't think that using a persons own cabling, mounting hardware and masts will interfere with the network. There are a lot of capable people out there that can do the installation themselves especially if some good instructions are given. I see the R1100 as a huge consideration as to why people will be reluctant to get the service and I think you should at least consider such an option.

Good luck with your broadband plans.

This sound good. Now I know exactly what kind of service you give. There's no hidden stuff.

It sounds really good to me.

I think this will really work for me, no, I know this will work for me.

OK so essentially the Telkom DSL speed test is fast coz this system runs on Telkom in the background.

So the test done at netspeed is a more true reflection of the actual speed outside Telkom's network......so it like 'Wireless Long Range DSL' with Telkom as the provider........mmmm.ok I get it.

Skrewball ,try http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

and let us know please, click on New York it's the fastest one wth the most bandwidth apparently

I am doing this the way my Reseller advised,to clear cache and make sure nothing else is active

I got this right now at Speakeasy 5pm:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 653 kbps (81.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 70 kbps (8.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

here are my telkom test results

Your line speed is approximately 738.1 Kbps or 90.4 kBytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

P.S. Ekhaatvensters I am now running through a Broadband Router as well.

P.S. This is not Excluziv internet's product that I'm using.
