wireless / 3g alarms and cameras

A couple of the businesses in the area have been hit over the past few weeks. The guys cut the alarm and then have the night to do whatever they want. So we are looking at installing a 3g / wireless alarm and cameras, so that 1- they can't cut it, and 2- we can receive alerts on our phone if it picks up any movement.

Has anyone used one of these? how effective are they, and do you have any suggestions or things I should look out for.
 
Most decent systems at least offer 3G modules as an addon option, at least I know Paradox do.

The alarm monitoring companies don't offer their own radio link from the panel to their monitoring room as standard? Seems strange to me.

yeah they just climb in the roof, cut the alarm and have the whole night to themselves. It does seem strange doesn't it, but as I said, it's happened to about 6 places around us already.

I am using a Paradox MG6250 wireless alarm. Comes with a built in 3g. I get notifications via SMS, I can also arm/disarm via SMS.
This Alarm is completely wireless. You cannot use any wired devices on it. It has a built in battery as well. If it switches from POWER to BATTERY you get a SMS notification.

Should also add that we have a radio link to our armed response

We use radio based alarms at work.

They came into our metal store, set off the alarm by ripping the PIR's off the wall and turning them around so they point at the wall then they run away and wait till armed response has done it's thing (we had ADT at the time and all they did was flash a torch through the gates).
Once ADT was gone they took their time and emptied everything out.

I had it on camera...

That sounds perfect. can you link it up to chubb or one of those places and does yours have a siren?

Thats a sign of poorly installed alarm systems. They can be connected to the panic that if the wires are cut, the panic goes off. Even old alarm system feature this.

I use to work in a control room and it was the quality of the install that always failed, not the hardware.

Its still good to have both a radio link and GSM link as a failover. You also get a GPRS link. Just remember that SMS's can get delayed on the network - you might want to also consider a TopUp contract and activate an SMS bundle to prevent a loop of death that can run up thousands of rands a day with a faulty system (seen this happen with dialup all the time).
 
@ave speak to your broker about the implications of the alarm system you want to use. You might not be covered if you do not have armed response and monitoring.

Then it's someone with quite a bit of knowledge about how the alarms work.

A proper alarm install will have its sensors installed as NC (normally closed). In the even that someone tampers/cuts the wires to the sensor then the alarm will go off. In other words a cut cable will be the same as the sensor being triggered. Most installs, however require a resistor to be placed very close to the PIR so that the panel will be able to tell the difference between an activated sensor or a cut wire.

So yeah, not quite sure how the crooks maanged to bypass that.

It does have a wireless siren as well. It is also linked to our security company.
 
What about a few PIR's in the roof? At least one that covers the radio link so it picks them up before they get to cut the link?
