Hi guys. I currently use my 3G dongle on my desktop PC for Internet, but would like to share the Internet over wifi with 2x laptops, a mobile phone and a Xbox.

I don't have any experience with wifi networks. I think I will buy a wireless access point, and share the 3G connection from my desktop PC to the WAP via LAN and then have the other devices connect to it over wifi.

Do you think this will work? Have you got any better ideas? I have looked at this WAP.

Hi Pakka

The Trendnet is nice.... but it's Fixed...
The below options are portable, so you can carry it with you to use with the Laptop or TabletPC etc.etc

or even at a buddy's place at lans.

All the new Android Phones have the function for "Wifi Hotspot". Built into the Android Operating system. I think it comes default with 2.3 and later.

I know the Sony Ericsson Ray has that function. (You put in any simcard, then you can set it up like an Access Point with Encryption for Security {WPA,WPA2, WEP})

Only thing is the XBOX, unless you got a wifi card on that too.

You can buy the Mifi (but they are limited to 7.2mbit and some are 3.6mbit only) - Also Wifi.

The Cellphone option gives you better speeds as the phone might support 14.4mbit, 21mbit etc. (Depending on which phone you get)

My 2Cents.

That Asus one looks quite promising...

Howmuch do they go for ?

http://www.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/WL330N3G/

Only issue is, it doesn't state what speed it can connect to the internet (Just says 3G). It mentions the LAN and Wifi of 150mbps... wich is nice..

But if it's only 3G (384K) the the 150mbps aint gonna help much.

BUt it still looks like a nice device

Hi Napalm,

The WL330N3G would use the maximum speed your 3G dongle is capable of.

Although it says 3G, we have tested it and gotten up to 12mbps download speeds.

The WL330N3G is pretty good, I use it with an E372 (flashed K4605), which is capable of 42mbps, although I have never come close to that speed.

Have any of you got a link to the Asus on an online shop where I can get it from?

Also, how many wifi devices will it be able to support at the same time? I have 5 devices at the moment.

By the way, do any of you know if the Xbox can connect to a wireless N network?

Thanks for all the advice

Pakka.

You get a Accessory that connects Xbox360 to Wireless N , but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.

Best option is to run a CAT5/CAT6 cable to the closest Wifi Router. Alternatively, you could invest in these new Ethernet over Power. (Plug with an ethernet port on it, 2 in a pack. and you plug xbox into the one plug, and you plug the other end from the router to the plug)
