Hi all
I'm in the middle of investigating products. I hope I've found all the relevant discussions on previous threads here. If anyone has any extra suggestions or comments on my ideas so far please say.

I badly need a wireless setup in my house, but I can't afford ADSL yet. We have two PCs that share a 56K dialup using Windows ICS and a crossover cable. (Obviously the speed is constrained but it's OK ... and Netmeter tells me I've done 7.3GB already this month.) But one of the machines needs to move into another room, and the other is my notebook which is not always there. Plus I really want to be able to reboot either machine without affecting the other.

So I want a wireless router. I will go to ADSL sometime (ISDN unlikely), and so I need a wireless ADSL router. But none of them clearly state that they even have a phone port, let alone support it as an uplink with proper remote control of dialling.

I'm considering
* Billion 7202G (R995 from jump.co.za) - I haven't searched for best prices yet, these are just examples
* Netgear DG834G (R859 at soholink.co.za)
* DLink DSL-G604T (R987.70 at digitalplanet)

Linksys seems good but generally more expensive. What do you think of Draytek (Vigor2600Gi)?

In summary my needs are
* Phone point with integrated 56K modem (or USB port supporting a USB modem as I have one spare)
* Ability to dial to the internet, not just as a backup line (no dial-in!)
* NAT, firewall, DHCP - all the boxes above seem to have these features
* Ethernet 2 or 4 ports (at a pinch one port)

And I'd like
* PPPoe capable (I thought this was standard but it's not always mentioned)
* Traffic stats - split by address on the local side
* The ability to block and/or prioritise addresses (QOS) on the local side would be a big plus!
* Netgear mentions "Content filtering lets you control access to inappropriate web sites and limit usage by time of day"

The next q will be how much should I expect to pay for a wireless access card? One machine is an HP dx2000 tower.

Thanks ... Joe

Hi,

I'm not exactly sure what you meant by the first 2 bullets, but the rest of your wants & needs are pretty standard. The Billion 7202G will fit the requirements. (I don't know the rest really) The jump price you mentioned sounds pretty steep though. Digital planet advertizes it for R811.

rgds.

Thanks GU7. The first two bullets are pretty important unless I wait until I can afford ADSL (and then wait until they install it):
* Phone point with integrated 56K modem (or USB port supporting a USB modem as I have one spare)
* Ability to dial to the internet, not just as a backup line (no dial-in!)

Basically I just want the router to work without an ADSL line, using a normal POTS line with a normal modem at 56K (knowing the performance will be limited). The problem is that this is obviously an unusual need and the shop and manufacturer web sites don't make it clear if it's possible.

Does anyone have a router like these on ADSL and has been able to use it over dial up if and when ADSL was down? That would be useful to know.

Joe

Goobie,
The DI824VUP might do for now, but I'd have to get a new one when I go to ADSL. Not ideal. Also I'd need to buy a modem as I only have a USB modem at present. (I can't see a data sheet or anywhere that specifies what modem support it has: where did you get that info?)

True it isn't an ADSL modem, but it is an awesome router with more features you will ever need and for another R400 you can buy an additional ADSL modem. I prefer my router and modem to be seperate, if the one blows the other should be fine, if you decide to forgo TElkom ADSL and wanna go with iBurst/MyWireless/SNO-broadband you merely swop out the modem.

Here are the info on that router from the D-Link (USA) website:
