Hi there

I've read the forum topics on which router is the best, but I couldn't get to a proper conclusion so I decided to rather throw my question out there for you guys and let the experts recommend one!

I need a wireless ADSL router that can do all the usual stuff, but I need explicitly the following:

1) It must have a USB port so that I can connect my printer to it so that all computers on the network can use the printer.

2) It must have excellent range. I've used the Telkom Marconi ADSL router before and after 10 meters and 3 walls the signal disappeared completely.

3) It must have PPPoE. Let me just check my understanding with you guys on this: does PPPoE mean that all the computers on the network can use the same internet connection, or does this in any case happen and PPPoE just mean you can track traffic for each computer seperately?

4) I need to connect 2 laptops, a PlayStation 3 and two HTC Touch Pro phones wirelessly to the network. Please keep this in mind when suggesting a router...would it be easier for some brands to connect the PS3 and HTCs over wi-fi to the network?

5) Which ISP would you recommend if I'd say my most important requirement is lowest possible latency (and not cost) for online gaming?

Your help and suggestions would be very much appreciated - please try and recommend a specific model, not just the brand - it seems as if everyone is kinda happy with Netgear or Billion, but I need a model in the range that can do the above.

Thanks!

1. You do find routers with USB ports however none of them can connect a printer, they are all designed to connect an external usb drive, or memmory stick, you will need a model specific print server to access your printer over the network.

2. Look for a router using Draft N or Draft N+ wireless, Netgear and Belkin both have excellent wireless routers that are very capable of covering an entire house. however 3 - 4 walls is a lot of concrete to go through, it may be worth moving the router to a different location or gettign a wireless repeater.

3. Most routers will have PPPoE, if it doesn't you probably won't find it for sale locally. PPPoE is the "protocol" used for ADSL in most cases locally.

4. Some Routers are not so good with VoIP phones, look for one that specifically mentions them, such as the NetGear DGN2000.

5. The best type of connection for low latency gaming would be unshaped, most ISP's have an unshaped option, but you will not get it at no cost. I'm slightly biased here since I've allways had good support and service from WebAfrica, I would suggets them.

Look for the Netgear DGN2000 or the Belkin N+, both are good and have excellent wireless range and speed, the DGN2000 is a little newer.

Something most people miss is that a good router/modem can make a huge difference to your DSL connection, with a netgear I've been able to maintain a solid connection of 2500kbs, while the telkom technician swears it's impossible for anyone in the area to have more than 384kbs.

I didn't mention billion simply because I have no personal experience with them.

1. There is no router that can connect a router and printer with a usb connection, but you can actually buy an Airlive print server and plug to the router.
2. The 7300N can go 100 metres line of sight.
3. All the Billion routers does support PPPOE connection.
4. You will be able to connect your HTC, PS3 and the 2 laptops to this router.

Does your HTC and laptops support the N draft wireless mode? If your devices do not support the Wireless N draft then I will suggest that you purchase the 7402G.
