Hi all,

With all the recent price drops on ADSL, I am now EVENTUALLY moving from ISDN to ADSL.

I need some advice and recommendations on hardware and setup. My plans were to have a wireless router with separate ADSL modem, so that I would only need to replace the modem if I decide on different Broadband at a later stage. This would most likely work out more expensive than a router+modem combo, but probably offers more flexibility.

I live in a duplex, so the ADSL box will replace my ISDN NT downstairs. I would like to keep the modem and router downstairs together with the NT if possible, and possibly mount all 3 in a small wall-mount switch box, or home-made box.

The router will serve my PC upstairs via CAT5, and will also need to serve my girlfriends, and any possible quests laptops via wireless (hopefully anywhere in the unit). My knowledge on wireless is almost zero, so, would anyone suggest having the router upstairs? My thinking was that the signal would pass upwards easier than it would downwards.

So these are my BASIC intentions and ideas, now I am open to any ideas and advice. On the hardware side, I am looking at the Linksys WRT54G router, but haven't been able to find an ADSL modem to connect to it via Ethernet ( not USB, obviously :) ).
I would like to keep the router and modem as same brand if possible. Also been looking at the D-Link range. They look good, and are also a respected company in networking, but at first glance appear to be more expensive than Linksys.

On a side note, does anyone have an opinion on the AMD Sempron 3000+’s wireless chip? What is signal like? Overall quality? Is it possible to attach an external antennae to it?

That’s it for now :)

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Hello CodeMaster

I'm using the WRT54G with the Billion 5102S. I've just connected the two router together via ethernet, and I'm using the Billion to provide the DHCP service.

My PC is about 10m away and I'm getting full strengh speeds (54Mb/s).

The Billion also supports ADSL2+, so if/when Telkom/SNO goes that way I'm covered.
I bought both the routers and the Billion pots filter from www.jump.co.za.

I've had no major problems setting it up.

Cheers

codemaster,
I have a Netgear DG834GT 108Mbps Wireless ADSL router. The modem is downstairs, but i dnt get signal upstairs. which is just above me. i tried putting the modem upstairs and i dnt get a signal downstairs.
I heard that the Linksys WRT54G is is a gr8 product and it wud wrk on a setup like tht. I havent seen it tho. concrete walls, can be a pain wen it comes to wireless networking. especially with 2 floors with concrete between.
Good Luck, and please let me know once u gt ur setup to work, i wna know wat u using! Thanks

I have an SMC wireless ADSL router (7904WBRA) that works fine throughout my double story house with a concrete slab floor and brick walls, with WPA enabled. I get full bars everywhere from my laptop. The router is upstairs - do not know if that makes any difference.

I'm also using a Planet ADE3100 Modem/Router and a Linksys WRT54g. Works great without problems

If you really want to keep things in the same brand, Linksys do offer the ADSL2MUE that is a Ethernet & USB modem for around R570. PM me if you struggle to get stock of one and I will see if I can help.

after doing multiple configs, adding a removing stuff, i'm positive its down to the wireless setting at Auto 108mbs. if you change it g & b on channel 11 everything is fine. alright so you could say you cant run at 108, but at least you get a constant connection. based on this netgear will hopefully address this on releasing a fix (ie firmware upgrade)

So yeah, anyone having issues with their Netgear, try:

1. Swapping out power adapters (wall wart)
2. Changing the wireless setting to B + G and channel 4

But of course switching to B + G mode is a waste of the GT, because I bought it for the sole reason of connecting at 108 via wireless. If I wanted to connect at 54 I would have gotten the G.

Hi guys, thanx for all the replies.

I think I will go with the WRT54g, It seems to be one of the best options around as far as price and performance goes.

I am looking into the ADSL2MUE modem right now to see if it is ADSL2+, like Nod said, it would be stupid not too, since the modems are available locally. It looks like all the Linksys equipment allows stacking by the foot pieces, which is handy.

The D-Link stuff just LOOKS way better than the Linksys stuff. I will keep you guys up-to-date, and let you know how it all works out.

Thanx again :)

@daffy,

It does indeed :)

I have decided on the WRT54g combined with the ADSL2MUE modem (which is also ADSL2/2+ for interest sake).

Anyone know of a good supplier of Linksys in the JHB area?

I think Incredible Connection sell it.

I have the WAG54G v2 and I've never been happier. I had the v1 and it was a piece of k@k. Complained to the supplier and they replaced it.

@daffy

Was about to send Uniterm an email from their website :)
Can u PM prices on the router and modem please?

Thanx

Thats a pile of WRT54Gs. The WAG54G doesn't have detachable antennas...

I personally like the Netgear products. I have one of these: http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WGU624.php
It works really well, has very good range.
Netgear has some suggestions about improving wireless range: http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101160.asp
All their home wireless routers: http://www.netgear.com/products/consumer/prod_router_wireless_hm.php
This was my other choice: http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WPN824.php but since I have an a/b/g card in my laptop, I chose the WGU624

Codemaster, I can help you out if you are looking some a supplier in the Sunninghill area. Give me a PM
