A wireless application service provider (WASP) is the generic name for a firm that provides remote services, typically to handheld devices that connect to wireless data networks such as cellphones or PDAs. WASPs are a specific category of application service providers (ASPs), though the latter term may more often be associated with standard web services. They can also be used for wireless bridging between different types of network topologies.

A WASP is a third party service provider who creates and distributes mobile content to subscribers via cellular network and infrastructure. The model of operation with these third party vendors is called the WASP Model.

WASPs use cellular networks to deliver mobile content (often marketing and promotional material) to their customers. They can also generate revenue by providing premium rated content that the subscriber is willing to pay for.
