Hi there

I am so frustrated I could scream!!! I have a tiny (2 pc) wireless network setup at home. My laptop and an internet pc are (were!!) connected. We started experiencing ADSL errors and called Telkom in to check the link which they found no fault with. The wireless connectivity however remained excellent, we just lost the outbound link from time to time. However, when the Telkom man left, my laptop was suddenly disconnected from the wireless lan. It was on and connected in my office when he got here - router in the house. On trying to re-establish the link, I discovered that all the router settings were gone. I checked with him, he knows nothing about it even though suddenly a new network appeared in my list.

I resetup the router and have tried using the same SSID name to connect from my laptop and the other pc and both are experiencing the same problem. Although the WPA key has remained the same - seems to be automatically inserted in the router settings - we have re-entered it on both pcs but with no luck. We get intermittent connectivity until somebody tries to enter a web site where you have to enter a password and then connectivity is dropped. I am currently working through a patch cable (usb) plugged directly into the router. The laptop nic connectivity light goes off when the link is dropped. If I view the network in my connections, it shows that it is acquiring an ip address. If I run ipconfig when the link is lost, I can only get an ip address for the usb connection, no ip address assigned to the wirelss nic. When the wireless link is up, then an ip address is assigned.

I have tried resetting the router to default settings and using a new SSID , but still no joy. THis is driving me crazy. Have had no joy through Telkom. Please, if there is anyone out there who may be able to assist, I would be hugely grateful.

Thanks ahead
Nikki

Something that i have found is that the default WPA key asighned to the router, and the key on the sticker can be different. If your connection is saying acquiring, then there usually is a problem with the key you entered.

Log into the router and re-enter the WPA key that is on the sticker, that is the only way to be sure what the real wpa key is.

Hope it helps.

PS: To test, disable security on the router, that way you will be able to see if it is a key problem or not.

Mine does the same, my solution:

Manually select the IPs, 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.3 .
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway = 10.0.0.2

You'll have to check the router config for the DNS settings...

Hi - thanks for replies.

Have tried to manually enter the WPA key as per sticker on back of router directly on router but no luck. Have also disabled the router security, still no luck. Changed wireless nic setting to use no encryption, no luck. Still only get few seconds of connectivity then dropped.

Manually assigned IP address, subnet mask and default gateway plus entered dns primary and secondary settings as per router, no luck. When link up for a seccie, I checked the ip address and it is the one that has been statically assigned.

Any other suggestions perhaps?

Big thanks.

As, I mentioned in first post and I dunno if this is something, but sometimes the link stays up for 15 mins or so and if I get all hopeful and go to the university web site to log in or to the banking site to log in - i.e. on the log in page, link is dropped immediately. Also trying to log in to Smarter Mail on webafrica page does the same thing. Once the link is dropped, then it goes up and down every few secs. Right now I have no tabs in Mozilla open to any of those sites and the link has been up for about 10 mins. Logging on to this site doesn't seem to cause the same problem.

Got to thinking that there had to be sumthing wrong with the router, nothing was making any sense.

Spent most of the day at Telkoms shop, got replacement Mega 100 router, set it up - tried to only to find that I couldn't even connect by either usb or ethernet patch to the router. Back to the Telkom shop for another swop out, got a Mega 200 router - working like a peach. Wireless up, fast, sweeeeettt!!!!

Thanks for the help!
